Jul. 6th, 2005 11:15 amA year ago today, I had my hysterectomy. I've been reading my journal prior to that to put tags in, and noticing how much day to day misery I was living with. My health has been so much better since then- not having to worry about searing, terrible pain knocking me down for days at a time... I even gave away my Vicodin stash because I didn't need it.
It's ironic that a year ago, I started a quite pleasant six week vacation and today I'm scheduled to be at work for fifteen hours. I miss those days where I got to wake up whenever I wanted, take naps whenever I wanted, and just read, swim, and take it easy. It makes me wish I could retire!
Anyway, I am grateful that my surgery went as well as it did, especially when I've heard many stories otherwise. As much as I like to burn incense and chew roots and all that, I truly appreciate Western medicine today.

Jul. 6th, 2005 12:50 pmThere are two big rooms that we phone monkeys all occupy here at work. There's the 'Big Room' where I sat for 3 years. It had nice big picture windows to look out of, even if you didn't sit right by one. Then there's the room where I sit now, called the Addition, the Cave, the Womb, or what I like to call the Veal Room. No windows. I miss seeing the sky sometimes.
There's a drought here. It snuck up on me; it was so cool and rainy all spring that I was relieved to see some sunny hot days that heat up the lake and make it fun to go swimming. But there hasn't been a drop of rain in too long. A lot of our yard is yellow, the grass along the highways is yellow and prone to catch fire when there's a wreck, and barn swallows are almost continuously dive-bombing my swimming pool. I hope all that chlorine isn't bad for them.
There's a few potential hurricanes out in the Gulf. Cindy was looking promising, but she ploughed into Louisiana. Dennis might bring relief, but he also looks like he's headed towards NOLA. I'm trying to tempt him here, while also politely asking that he not pound Houston to kibble along the way; I have friends there.
We had window guy come out and measure for the new windows. Fortunately he can work around our furniture so there won't be too much disruption. That'll happen in about 5-6 weeks.
I came in at 8am today, and will get to sign off the phones at 4:30. Sadly, it's because I get to go to a training, which lasts 'til 11pm. This will get all my training for the next couple of years out of the way, but after 5 days off it's a hell of a long day. And I didn't sleep well, so I'm kind of in zombie mode today. Ugh.
Rain, rain, rain, rain, raaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnn........

Jul. 6th, 2005 01:35 pm...and right when I was fondly recalling my days of not-work; I feel so French. I hope they hold on to that attitude; frankly I think we would all benefit from it.
"Working hours in America -- the nation in the world with by far the most efficient human engines -- have risen steadily over the last three decades. And far from complaining, we have adopted a superior, moralizing attitude that sees work not as a necessary evil, a means to an end, but as an end in itself. It is now obligatory to boast -- to lie, if necessary -- about how much you work and how little you sleep."
I see this attitude all around, and it makes no sense to me. I want to ask these folks "why on earth are you bragging about how much you're kicking your own ass, and for what?" Who was it that said that no one ever says on their deathbed "I wish I had spent more time at the office"?
No Rest for the Weary
( or if you don't want to venture away, here's the article )

Jul. 6th, 2005 04:00 pmThis is an interesting, if rather sloppy and overly-political, essay on how work sucks. It gave me a new word to glom on to- ludic
The Abolition of Work
I have been able to wade through half; I'll probably finish it at work tomorrow. HA!

Jul. 6th, 2005 04:21 pmOh, and Jim Spencer grew a goatee. He has ceased being the friendly channel four weather man, and now looks like an evil necromancer who should be wearing a purple cape with a stand-up collar. I don't think I can recover...
