Anyone up for some Rock Band tomorrow evening?

I've got a shift until 8pm, but consider the house open for visitors after that. I don't have to be anywhere the next morning, so we'll go until we're done going. BYOB, don't be a jerk, blah blah. Even if you don't necessarily want to do any Rock Banding, feel free to pop in and say hi!
austin_tycho: crater (Trogdor)
You haven't had a Rock Band post in awhile! Time to fix that!

You may or may not recall that for Rock Band 3, you only get one band. So that list I made of band names was not fully utilized, and I ended up being stuck with the first name I picked, which I chose because it seemed the most memorable and simultaneously the least likely to have already been picked. The band is called the Sociopathic Murder Hobos. This was taken from someone's description of a typical Dungeons and Dragons adventuring party.

Characters in this band include the fellow in the icon, Trogdor, who's been my Rock Band alter ego from the beginning. Also is Megandeth, which is JD if he were a girl (his parents thought he was going to be a girl and were going to name him Megan until he had to go and ruin everything), emo Jeff Buckley and the Dalai Lama. It is weird seeing the Dalai Lama make the 'rock face'.

Today was released the new Foo Fighters pack of four songs, though only two of them are from the new album. Here's how I did on the leaderboards:
'Walk'- #7 (harmony- if you have two mikes, and the harmonies don't intersect or overlap and are octaves, you can get more points for singing more parts); #89 (band)
'Stacked Actors'- #10 (solo vocals); #159 (band)
'Rope'- #7 (harmony); #149 (band)
'Long Road to Ruin'- #7 (harmony); #37 (band)

So, you're always playing in your band- and the reason I ranked lower for band scores is because that includes the potential to have up to four other people adding their individual scores in. But yeah, I'm 7th in the world for most of these on vocals! This will naturally change (and likely has already) as more people download the songs and play them.

Last week or a couple of weeks ago, some Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks songs came out. I've always loved 'Landslide' so I did that one and got 99% on it on Expert. My band score ended up being one point lower than Stevie's band score, which is amazing considering we're talking about scores around 120,000. So I ran through the song today until I got 100% on Expert, and beat Stevie's band. His band score is close to mine because he's his own band like I am, but on drums guitar. If either of us were to play more often with other people this wouldn't be happening. Or, of course, we could play together, and combine our powers for the good of humanity. Discussions are underway.

Yeah, I said it. Here's the thing- I don't have to work an early shift on Saturdays anymore, so we can stay up as late as we want! But to get that day off I had to take a Friday evening shift which ends at 8pm. So please don't show up before then, since I work right up through the end of my shifts. But yeah, come on by; bring drinks or snacks or what-have-you.

Hey! Guys! Guys! Guys!

I've pre-ordered a Rock Band 3 package that comes with the game and the keytar and some extra songs! It's being released 10/26! Hot damn!

YES! By which I mean, behold, a song by the band Yes!

I like it. But you knew I would. Well, even if you didn't, I knew I would. The only way I could not like it would be if it was a band I really loathed. Like... oh, Lynyrd Skynyrd.

So, I started playing around 2:30; Threeve and Amanda came by a bit after 3. JD showed up at 6pm, and Eric got in on the action near the end- but we went though all the songs by about 10pm. I think I sang on every song except one or two. Amanda, Threeve and I were all doing vocals initially because all of us wanted to sing, and on a couple of songs that needed only one vocalist I went and screwed with laundry and whatall. But the songs were fun, and I'm currently at 5 on the Leaderboards for 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams', and in the top 20 for a bunch of others. I'm sure that will probably evaporate as more people get the game and play through it, but screw it! I burned a day playing Rock Band. I'd do it again too! I regret nothing!

I'm waiting for the Green Day Rock Band extra stuff to download- I has an export code to make sure I have all the Green Day stuff from the previous Rock Bands connected up with this game. It's a perfectly reasonable thing, but everyone and their dog is probably trying to do this at the same time, so it's taking some time. In the meme-time, what song makes me sad?

It's appropriate for today, because there seems to be a rash of sad going around. The first one that popped into my head was this one. My ex, the guy I was engaged to before he cheated on me then dumped me, said after we broke up that this song made him think about me. It seems to be full of regret, and hearing that he felt all this regret saddened me greatly on several levels. Primarily, if he thought I was such a great catch, why dump me? Why, indeed. Having done that cleared the way for much, much better things in my life, but of course I couldn't know that at the time. And the song is still sad; unless I'm in just the right mood (you know the one I'm talking about) I will usually change the station if this song comes on. Read more... )

I cannot concentrate on my work this morning. It's a bunch of hotel reviews (WAFFLES!) and it's just boooooring. I've got things to do, man! Places to go!

Eric was kind enough to pre-order Green Day Rock Band for me. I am not a huge fan, but like I told Stevie, I'm Rock Band's bitch, especially now that they've figured out how to do harmonies. The dude told Eric that Rock Band 3 is coming out for Christmas; you know I'll be all over that. In the meantime, I need to start listening to some Green Day, I suppose. But even if I don't, I suspect that I will like them a lot better after RB comes out. Learning any piece in order to perform it almost always makes me fall in love with it.

Gaaah, back to work.

Threeve and I did a lot of singing in Rock Band today. He indulged me and sang harmonies with me for Beatles Rock Band, and then I downloaded some of the Jimi Hendrix songs at his request and we sang some of that. I did not do terribly well. That spawned this conversation.

5:49 PM me: I can't sing Jimi Hendrix!
5:50 PM Joel: try using your left hand!

Spring is officially here, because I saw a bluebonnet on my drive to work. Huzzah!

Monday was the John Mayer concert. I wish he wasn't such a douchebag; it gets old saying "yeah, but he really is a good musician!" I'm not one of those people like my dad who thinks entertainers should just shut the hell up when they're not acting or tap-dancing or what-have-you, but it seems like whenever Johnny opens his mouth outside of a concert venue he says something offensive or stupid. He even wrote a song about how he does this, so it's not like he's unaware of that tendency. Oh well; it was a great concert regardless. I went with JD, who got introduced to Johnny's guitar face. I mean he has a really freaky-looking guitar face. This is how you can tell he's a Real Musician.

His opening act wasn't impressive. Some guy named Michael Franti. He was alright, not especially remarkable except he kept insisting that we get our hands in the air, sing with him, come on Austin let me hear you! Dude, I paid to hear you, why I gotta do all this work?

I hadn't been to a concert at the Erwin Center for some time; I wish there were more concerts there (going to see Dave Matthews in Dallas in September; what a pain) and fondly remember the many shows I went to in the late eighties. And as is traditional for me, afterwards we went to Player's for a burger and a shake, another place I remember fondly from my college days. And people are going to UT now who weren't even born when I was attending. That's weird to think about.

Yesterday Tsarina and I had lunch and talked girl talk, even though neither of us is particularly girly. It was satisfying and we're discussing making this a regular thing. After, I dragged Threeve over and forced him to play Rock Band with me all afternoon while he did some laundry. The most amusing bit, aside from him deciding halfway through that he's just not fucking going to sing ABC (Jackson Five), and who can blame him, was both of our attempts to drum through Neil Peart's re-write of the Hockey Song, the theme that they play for Canada's Monday-Night-Football-But-With-Hockey. It's 61 seconds of torture. He and I both managed a score in the 70's, though he was on Medium level difficulty whilst I was on Easy.

Eric came home and wasn't up for cooking so we enjoyed the previously-mentioned feast at Arby's (now with mint shake! Tasty, but damn being taught metric, I had no idea 32 ounces of shake was going to be so much shake. It was their medium size, which I figured was a reasonable amount of shake- I was wrong. It was an absurdly large amount of shake. It was good though), then took a walk around the neighborhood. Things are blooming… what's weird is that the mountain laurels have not gone off yet. They are usually finishing up their flowering by the time the bluebonnets get started. Anyway we had a nice stroll.

This is my favorite time of year, when it stops being cold but before it starts being hot. My other favorite time is when it stops being hot but before it starts being cold, usually sometime in October. I also enjoy the thunderstorms, which we've already had a couple of this week. What don't I enjoy? The fact that Daylight Savings Time starts this weekend. I hate you, DST! There is no good reason for you.

After fucking up my shift this morning, I pretty much hung out and did a bunch of nothing- well, I did some laundry and some dishes, so on second thought, I busted my ass today! Also, Stevie came over and we learned how to make coffee! And, sung a bunch of Beatles songs.

Eric got home, and shit was starting to ice over but we figured what the hell- we still wanted to try to make the Howie Day concert. Hey, maybe the weather would keep more people home! That kinda worked, actually. Maybe Howie's not as popular as he could be, and it was a Thursday, but even showing up awhile after the doors opened we were able to get about 2 people away from the stage.

But first, dinner. For the first time ever I got a craving for a hot dog (hush, you). So we went to Frank which is a sort of fancy-ass hot dog place that serves poutine, among other things. We stuffed ourselves on probably not the most healthy food ever (but really tasty I tell you!) and delicious cream soda. Here's how they are- more than half of their desserts had bacon. This is definitely a sometimes food place.

Anyway, concert- the opening act was a last-minute reschedule and it was some guy from New York (Mikey Wax) with a keyboard. He was an okay musician, but too... I dunno, clean-cut and Manilow-esque, which worked for me when I was 12 I guess but I wish he'd said 'fuck' at least once for some reason. Howie was fine- it was pretty much the same concert I saw a few months ago. I saw again how uncomfortable the guy is with between-song banter. He gets nervous and awkward and it's really kind of cute. He did play around with his old stuff a little more, and was obviously having fun, and it all sounded excellent. He's the one that has a billion pedals and loops stuff so that he sounds like a pretty substantial band but is just the one guy with an acoustic guitar. Pretty snazzy.

More concerts coming up- John Mayer's actually coming to Austin for once, as are the Flaming Lips. I hear Muse is coming to town for SXSW, but SXSW is expensive and vexing to one as crowd-averse as myself. Them Crooked Vultures seems to be getting a lot more airtime these days; it'd be awfully keen if they were to tour...
austin_tycho: crater (Trogdor)
Oh my holy crap. I just drummed the latest Rock Band download, the Who medley they played at the Super Bowl. It kicked my ass on Easy, but I still managed to get 88%. Not terrible! And it's awesome that they have that available already, by zee way.
austin_tycho: crater (Mugwort)
This head cold, verily it sucketh. I don't think I've had one this bad since the one I got right when we went to London. I stayed home from work yesterday and spent time with the Quil brothers (Ny and Day), and also with Threeve because we hadn't hung out in awhile and I was not sick enough to want to sleep all day, and was feeling bored and lonely. I also wanted to pick his brain about my drumming- but when I sat down at the set, I did a hell of a lot better than I had the day before. I'm not sure what was different- maybe my brain just needed a bit of time to wire up the neural pathways, but I was scoring at least 90% on just about every song I tried. On Easy, yeah, but this was only day two of this process so that's not too bad. He offered a couple of pointers, though, and we caught up and had a nice afternoon.

I thought about calling in sick for yoga- Pixie has been giving free yoga lessons for her teacher certification. I sacked up and went anyway, and I'm glad I did. I learned how many frogs I can do before my legs cry 'uncle'- 19. I tend to think I'm in bad shape because I'm generally such a lard-ass, but yoga makes me think I'm in better shape than I often assume. Maybe it's a high constitution. I don't know if I could fight off or outrun a grizzly bear, but you betcha I can do breath of fire for a long time.

I didn't sleep worth a damn, and the cold is trying to crawl down into my lungs. Bleh. There will be more drumming today.
austin_tycho: crater (Trogdor)
Okay, either our drum kit is sucky, or I'm doing something wrong. I feel like I'm hitting the notes, but it's showing me missing a lot more. Not hitting in the right place, maybe? Hmm.

In any event, after dicking around with the tutorial: 'Yellow Submarine', 91% on easy.'Getting Better', 86%. 'Lucy in the Sky' 65%.

Dammit, this is frustrating. Eric says the red drum is half-busted, this may be part of my problem.

Okay, 95% on 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', which has very little red drum. I think the issue is less with my sucking (though that's certainly some of it).

So, the rest of the Rubber Soul album was released for Beatles Rock Band today. I downloaded it and immediately jumped on and did the vocal tracks at Expert level, just to see how I'd do. My thoughts, and scores:

Norwegian Wood: 97%, 5 stars, 17th on the leaderboards around noon. Mom told me when I was a wee child that this song was about marijuana, which flies directly in the face of statements that have recently been made about the Beatles having no drug references in any of their songs. So, make of that what you will. I'm surprised I didn't do better on this, but I'll attribute that to it being the first song and I don't believe in warming up.

You Won't See Me: 99%, 5 stars, 14th. Nothing of note; this wasn't a song I was very familiar with.

Nowhere Man: 99%, 5 stars, 26th. This song seems so... sixties, I guess, but I like it anyway.

Think For Yourself: 94%, 4 stars, 23rd. Here's George Harrison being kind of preachy. It's another song I wasn't too familiar with, and the tune has a lot of short phrases that aren't very intuitive.

The Word: 98%, 5 stars, 9th. I wasn't familiar with this one at all, but the phrases were long at it's repetitive, so easy to sight-read. I like the sentiment too.

Michelle: 100%, 6 stars, 19th. My very favorite Beatles tune, since it's my middle name, and I've heard it and sung along with it a zillion times. I don't speak ze French, but I was still able to nail the tune. I think a lot of other people must like this one, because to get essentially a perfect score and still get 19th on the leaderboards means more competition.

What Goes On: 99%, 5 stars, 9th. Oh lord, this is such a hick-sounding country song. Still, those are fun to sing. It will be fun to try the harmonies on this one too.

Girl: 99%, 6 stars, 15th. I'm surprised I got the gold stars for this one- I'm not as familiar with it. It's interesting, because it seems like quite a romantic tune until you really get into the words, and then it's about what a mean twunt (as my brother would say) this woman is. It also features John Lennon's breathing, like a couple of other songs I'm not immediately recalling. Revolution, I think, and there's at least one other one.

In My Life: 99%, 5 stars, 22nd: Ooh, I sure like this one. Not much else to say about it.

Wait: 92%, 4 stars, 19th: Why did I suck on this one so much? Again, lack of familiarity, and I just don't care for the song that much.

Run For Your Life: 98%, 5 stars, 13th: This is probably the most fucked-up song by the Beatles. I like it even less than 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer' which at least sounds cheerful if you don't realize it's about a damn serial killer. The sentiment is really disturbing, though the Wikipedia article mitigates that a little. On top of everything else, it sounds like a Monkees song.

It may have shown up before because I can't look at the animation much when I'm singing, but a 12-string guitar showed up for one of the songs which was cool. I don't remember which one though.

This is the last download that Rock Band has planned for the Beatles, as far as I know. They've said that it's a huge pain in the ass to secure the rights or get ahold of the masters or something, so they're not promising anything- but if sales are good, they might come out with more. I sure hope so. I've heard rumors that they're working on a Who version, but blah. The next Rock Band needs to be Led Zep or nuthin'.
austin_tycho: crater (George Harrison)
It's been another low-key day. Shift in the am then some Sgt. Pepper DLC for Rock Band; I tried them all on expert just to get up on the leaderboards (as of right now, "Fixing a Hole" (31), "She's Leaving Home" (57), "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" (9), "Within You Without You" (20), "When I'm Sixty-Four" (36), "Lovely Rita" (19), "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)" (14), and "A Day in the Life" (41)) and once again remember how fond I am of the Beatles. Although I am getting the impression that John Lennon was sort of a jerk on occasion. Well, nobody's perfect.

I also got John Mayer's new cd in the mail. The first listen was a little disappointing; he was doing a good job shoehorning some blues into his songs on the last album, but he seems to have reverted to his old swoony-croony stuff. A couple more listens and I can pick out some blues, but you have to listen for it. I guess being a bazillionaire entertainer dating supermodels just doesn't make for good blues fodder. So it's okay, but a little slicker than I'd have liked.

I also also got the latest from the Foo Fighters, but it's a greatest hits album with only two new songs on it. One of them, the one that's getting a lot of airtime, sounds a whole lot like a Tom Petty song- and I'm not really all that big on Tom Petty. The other, 'Word Forward', is a good solid rock song that I like a lot, and have hollered myself hoarse on for Rock Band 2. I suppose I ought to pick up the Them Crooked Vultures cd soon too.

A cold front blew through yesterday, and I made jokes about outrunning the cold a la 'Day After Tomorrow' as we went to see '2012', which was delightfully terrible. I mean, they didn't even try to be believable at all. It was just packed full of absurd explodey goodness. I wouldn't really recommend it unless you're willing to put up with it's terribleness, but it will make excellent fodder for the Riff Trax guys.
austin_tycho: crater (George Harrison)
It's been a good day so far. I slept in (woo!) and then Stevie came over for some Rock Band lunch. I've been trying my hand at playing bass and singing at the same time, which I haven't done a lot of lately for whatever reason- it hurts my brain, but I'm doing pretty well. I just got 100/100 (bass- easy, vocal- hard) on
Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band/With A Little Help From My Friends. He also bought me some more xbox points so that I can get the rest of the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album when they release it tomorrow. Woo again!

Work Steve and Gordon and Eric and I met for lunch at the Cheesecake Factory, where I got the smallest birthday sundae ever, which was exactly the size I wanted. Later, Eric and I are going to go see that disaster porn movie 2012 at the Alamo Lake Creek, since they have poutine on the menu. I have very low expectations of that movie, which I think is the best way to go see such a film. It's been said that Roland Emmerich makes the best shitty movies, and it's at the Alamo (the theater, not the mission in San Antonio where the famous battle was fought- which led to a very amusing misunderstanding in a conversation recently) so there's booze. What could be better?
austin_tycho: crater (George Harrison)
I really meant to be productive today, and I wasn't a total waste of oxygen, but there was so much good Rock Band stuff out to tempt me away from responsibility.

In Beatles Rock Band, the rest of the tracks off Abbey Road were released for purchase and download. I stopped in the middle of my shift to pull that down and play just a couple of songs before knuckling down over the reviews again. The song I was really eager to jump upon was 'Oh! Darling'.

I remember when RB2 put 'Piece of My Heart', Janis Joplin flavor, and we looked it over and Threeve said "this has to be sung by a girl, and she has to really own it." Amanda volunteered to do it... I had thought about it, and recalled that I decided that while I could probably turn in an otherwise close to note-perfect performance of the song (because I've heard it a kabillion times) I couldn't really own it. Why? I'm not sure. But 'Oh! Darling' has that same sort of raw, over-wrought, raggedy sound to it and for whatever reason I can just completely get into that song. I love it.

So when the clock struck noon Stevie was knocking on my door to do a Rock Band lunch, and we belted out the album (after he did some very appreciated fiddling with the TV de los Dios and improved the playability of the game quite nicely) and just nailed a lot of it. I haven't checked lately but we were in the top 10 for most of the songs on the leaderboards, I think. I'm sure we've dropped since, but even so.

Then JD sent me a link that ended up reminding me that Rock Band 2 released a bunch of Queen songs. The afternoon was wearing on and I hadn't done shit around the house, but I had to download it and at least hit one song- another one of my favorite over-wrought, melodramatic songs- 'Somebody to Love'. I got 95% on Expert, which is not too shabby.
