Wow.

The summer between my freshman and sophomore years in college (1987) I worked at a corn dog place in the mall in Kerrville (yes, the mall). It was a horrible job, and on my breaks I'd go to an arcade next door and play this terribly violent pinball game that was Vietnam war-themed. Like, the sound effects were machine guns and bombs exploding, and the three bumper things were little thatched-roof huts that you could napalm if you made some special moves. It was very cathartic. Anyway, I mentioned this to JD probably five years ago, and he has been looking for this ever since, and finally found it. It's as violent as I remember. I remember that soldier on the front display like an old friend. I got a lot of aggression out with that game. It's probably directly responsible for preventing the murder of a manager of a corn dog place.

Dude, I am way too clumsy and self-conscious to dance. The last time I tried was at my senior prom almost... shit, thirty years ago. I'm not saying I'll never dance, but if it's going to happen I'll probably have to be pretty intoxicated. And to a song such as this. The yelling in Spanish is optional.

Bean wants me to post more, and I want to too. My jones for blathering to the world at large is met with Facebook, but I'm not writing down my more reflective stuff, and I'd like to do more of that here.

Thing is, I'm feeling old in that way where time seems to be speeding by with not much difference between the days. I mean, a lot of stuff has happened this year- Bowie left us, I saw Paul McCartney in concert, I had nose surgery... but it's all rushing past.

I suspect part of it is that nothing terribly traumatic is going on, and I lose the sense of time dilation that comes with that. Which is fine, really.

I freaking love the pool. I try to swim in it every day, and it reminds me of when I was a kid... when everyone else is done, I'm still swimming and have to get dragged out of the pool to go to sleep or eat dinner whatever.

JD and I are going to San Francisco in August; he has a MTG tournament in Oakland. We had an awesome place secured through AirBnB, but the dude cancelled, which is a reasonable thing to allow hosts to do, but it's still a big pain in the ass. So now, I'm trying to find a place that meets my many criteria. The bed has to be bigger than a full-sized bed. It's weird how many people don't say how big their bed is; that's one of the big hard limits I have (I sprawl when I sleep, and if there's someone else in the bed there'd better be room), and evidently a lot of people don't think it's worth mentioning. There has to be some reasonable parking- we're renting a car because there's a lot of things I want to see that require a car. Those are the big two... there's others that are negotiable. Then there's the price limit- and SF is not cheap!

So I'm waiting to hear back from several folks. My first string's all been shot down. A lot of people in SF don't bother to update their calendars, so the website will say they're available and then when I inquire, they'll say they're not available. This either means my profile is heinously offensive in some way I can't determine, which seems unlikely though I'll try running it by some folks just in case... or that SF is full of a lot of flaky people (I didn't have this problem when I was looking for a place in New York). Well, that's part of the charm of the place. I just hope I can find a place to stay that's at least middling-awesome!

You know what? My LiveJournal is ten years old today.

Huzzah! *throws confetti* I've met some awesome friends through LJ, and it's a damn sight better than that Word doc I was using for my journal. Which was better than the spiral notebooks I was using before that, and the little page-a-day diaries with the wee lock on them I used when I was a kid. I've been journaling since before some of you were born... and before "journal" was made into a verb, for that matter. Anyway, I'll probably keep doing it in some form or fashion until my brain goes or I get arm cancer. It helps me think through the thornier issues I've got going, and helps me keep track of my shit.

Thanks, LiveJournal.

Yesterday was a trip down memory lane after church.

Oh- speaking of that, first services to sing at for the year. We did a version of a Joni Mitchell song ('Circle Game') with the children's choir. Assessment- treacly, out-of-tune, adorable.

After, it was too nice to stay inside so JD asked me to give him a tour of the UT campus, so that I could tell him about all the places I went to class and hung out at. He'd taken me on a similar tour of the A&M campus, so it seemed fair. It was delightful of him to ask, too, since I know he harbors an irrational hatred of all things UT-related. I started with the apartments I lived in, all three of them, and the co-op where I moved when I first came to Austin way back in 1986. We stopped at each one- I marveled at the changes and the lack of changes and spun many tales of misspent youth. Then to the campus itself- here's where my astronomy classes were, here's where my psych classes were, blah blah. The bowling alley at the student union is a lot cooler now. And the turtle pond has been turned into a full-blown memorial to the Whitman shootings, but is still crammed full of more happy turtles than ever, who were also enjoying the weather.

It had been maybe two decades since I had visited some of those places. What an amazing time of my life that was.

We had a meeting for my work-at-home job at their main office. It would seem that BV pretty much owns the world for what they do. Here's a CNN feature:

You may note that apparently one is either a parent or single. @@ Anyway, rah, rah, go team, marketing jargon- the meeting ran long, so Amanda and I missed having dinner with Pixie and her friend, so we just pigged out on the cheese plate and whatall after the meeting and went down to the Alamo for the Ladies of the 80's singalong and secured a place in line.

That was odd, because most people there were little kids in the 80's; this was music from my teen years. *shakes cane* I didn't get up and dance around, and I sure didn't dress up for this, but I still had a fantastic time. I didn't realize this was going to be such a production; pyrotechnics, confetti cannon, balloons, streamers, glowy necklaces, a trampoline, on and on. The audience was very pro-gay-dude; they went nuts at the gay ending for the "Let's Get Physical" video (which completely surprised me- I didn't remember that at all) and when "It's Raining Men" spun up, inflatable men got thrown off the balcony into the audience and were encouraged to have sex with each other many times. There was lots of drunken shrieking; it was like a musical bachelorette party and not something I'd want to do every day, but plenty of fun anyway.

Yesterday was supposed to be the museum visit, but it didn't happen; we ended up running errands. Eric and I have both been really tired the last couple of days and can't figure out why. We're getting enough sleep and all; it almost feels like we're fighting off some cold or something. I hope it's not head cancer.

Spring is officially here, because I saw a bluebonnet on my drive to work. Huzzah!

Monday was the John Mayer concert. I wish he wasn't such a douchebag; it gets old saying "yeah, but he really is a good musician!" I'm not one of those people like my dad who thinks entertainers should just shut the hell up when they're not acting or tap-dancing or what-have-you, but it seems like whenever Johnny opens his mouth outside of a concert venue he says something offensive or stupid. He even wrote a song about how he does this, so it's not like he's unaware of that tendency. Oh well; it was a great concert regardless. I went with JD, who got introduced to Johnny's guitar face. I mean he has a really freaky-looking guitar face. This is how you can tell he's a Real Musician.

His opening act wasn't impressive. Some guy named Michael Franti. He was alright, not especially remarkable except he kept insisting that we get our hands in the air, sing with him, come on Austin let me hear you! Dude, I paid to hear you, why I gotta do all this work?

I hadn't been to a concert at the Erwin Center for some time; I wish there were more concerts there (going to see Dave Matthews in Dallas in September; what a pain) and fondly remember the many shows I went to in the late eighties. And as is traditional for me, afterwards we went to Player's for a burger and a shake, another place I remember fondly from my college days. And people are going to UT now who weren't even born when I was attending. That's weird to think about.

Yesterday Tsarina and I had lunch and talked girl talk, even though neither of us is particularly girly. It was satisfying and we're discussing making this a regular thing. After, I dragged Threeve over and forced him to play Rock Band with me all afternoon while he did some laundry. The most amusing bit, aside from him deciding halfway through that he's just not fucking going to sing ABC (Jackson Five), and who can blame him, was both of our attempts to drum through Neil Peart's re-write of the Hockey Song, the theme that they play for Canada's Monday-Night-Football-But-With-Hockey. It's 61 seconds of torture. He and I both managed a score in the 70's, though he was on Medium level difficulty whilst I was on Easy.

Eric came home and wasn't up for cooking so we enjoyed the previously-mentioned feast at Arby's (now with mint shake! Tasty, but damn being taught metric, I had no idea 32 ounces of shake was going to be so much shake. It was their medium size, which I figured was a reasonable amount of shake- I was wrong. It was an absurdly large amount of shake. It was good though), then took a walk around the neighborhood. Things are blooming… what's weird is that the mountain laurels have not gone off yet. They are usually finishing up their flowering by the time the bluebonnets get started. Anyway we had a nice stroll.

This is my favorite time of year, when it stops being cold but before it starts being hot. My other favorite time is when it stops being hot but before it starts being cold, usually sometime in October. I also enjoy the thunderstorms, which we've already had a couple of this week. What don't I enjoy? The fact that Daylight Savings Time starts this weekend. I hate you, DST! There is no good reason for you.

Brö reminded me of this song, which I adored and is just catchy as hell. His intro- "the glorious return of the world's happiest drummer :)" So eighties, I love it.

Another one they won't let me embed. Oh well. It's 'Vox Humana' by Kenny Loggins. Shut up! It's full of eighties awesomeness!

My lack of virginity turns twenty-three today. Happy Valentine's Day! In other news, jesus I'm fucking old.

Last night to celebrate (Valentine's, as well as Friday the 13th, not my loss of virginity) several of us went to Buco for pasta and then to Pixie's place to watch a werewolf romance called 'Blood and Chocolate' which appears to be based off a book. The movie was pretty predictable, but like I've said elsewhere I always enjoy werewolf movies even if they suck. I've seen a couple of other movies recently as well; 'Choke' which was made inexplicably more enjoyable when I learned that the main character (the sex addict) was played by the same fellow who was Guy the red-shirt in 'Galaxy Quest', which is one of my favorite guilty-pleasure movies. And, 'Zack and Miri Make a Porno' which was also predictable and unbelievable but also thoroughly enjoyable to watch. Nerd humor plus porn humor; what could be better?

Here is a video I've watched a couple of times because it features a pretty boy rolling around on the floor. There seems to be a debate about whether this song is about a woman or about drugs. I'm thinking drugs. I've been liking this one on Rock Band a lot (even though it's a freaking cover). It's very Beatles-ey.

Here's another video, this one with Dave Grohl, who I don't generally think of as sexy, being very sexy at some glass. It's also another song I like doing in Rock Band. Plus, there is a lizard.

they won't let me embed it
