I got that there icon from Xbox as a reward for getting gold stars on 4 specific songs- ones that are more George Harrisony than the rest. I had to try twice for 'Taxman' (ah aaah, Mister Heath!) and 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' which isn't otherwise a hard song but has all this rambling wailing at the end that took some effort to nail. So, George-Harrison-shaped food pellet for this rat!

I also luuuuurve to sing 'Within You Without You' and just watch the video... I was reading the criticisms of the game and it was mentioned that they put all this effort into making these complex, beautiful dreamscape videos that you can't even appreciate because you're busy watching the scrolling dots. So I just ignore the scrolling dots, since the song's a Mixolydian drone that's easy enough to fake once you get the sound of it in your head, and enjoy the video. And according to Wikipedia, the song "was written on a harmonium at the house of long-time Beatles friend Klaus Voormann, while "there were lots of joints being smoked"." Color me about to have a heart attack of not-surprise.

Rock Band!

There's been a Beatles revival in my head thanks to Rock Band. Most of the soundtrack coming from the squishy grey ipod in my skull has consisted of Beatles tracks. The harmonies feature is splendid; today, though, I tried some songs on Expert by myself. Being able to see just one vocal track is certainly less confusing, and I got 6 stars (or technically 5 gold stars, which is one better than 5 boring ol' regular stars) on 3 songs (Dear Prudence, Eight Days A Week, Here Comes The Sun) though I didn't manage to get 100% on any of them- but 99% is not too bad.

I never realized how much of a twangy country song 'Octopus's Garden' was.

'Helter Skelter' vexes me. I almost failed out of it (on Expert, but still).

I think I would like to have several of George Harrison's babies. Great, another dead rock star I love. Hell. I'd like to track down a copy of 'Within You Without You/Tomorrow Never Knows' which was not on the pile of mp3s I got from Threeve. Soon.

First, chores.

And in the end
The love you take
Is equal to the love you make.

Yeah! Finished the story part of Beatles Rock Band. Very cool.

For the record, the Beatle who's voice I seem to be able to match most closely seems to be John Lennon. He's not even my favorite. My favorite was Paul McCartney when I was in high school, and ran with a group of friends who demanded that I pick a favorite Beatle, so they could then induct me into their secret club. I still probably have the shoelaces somewhere that one of them made for me that said "I ♥ Paul". Anymore, my favorite's probably George Harrison, just because he seems like he'd've been the one I would've liked to hang out with most, plus I think he had great eyebrows.

I think I'd bitched plenty about the fact that I'd spent all this extra money to get the latest Rock Band game delivered to my door on its release date, only to remember that said date happened to fall on a Wednesday, the day when I go from work directly to choir, and even if I did want to play a video game when I finally get home at 9pm, I couldn't because Eric's D&D group meets here and takes over the living room on Wednesday nights. Well, there was enough whining out of me about it that Eric graciously volunteered to kick his group out by 10pm, so a Rock Band Event shaped up quite nicely. It's a testament that I stayed up until past 2am last night, and woke up at 7am and wanted to run downstairs and play some more. I didn't, though, because other members of the household are sleeping and I've got a shift to complete anyway.

First impressions- the muted color scheme is nice, but the lack of contrast makes things a little more difficult to see sometimes. The artwork is otherwise absolutely outstanding. The song catalog's pretty keen, though of course we didn't make it through every song- and just from an emotional standpoint it was interesting to see them go from somewhat vacuous and happy ("I Saw Her Standing There") to jaded and more bitter ("I'm Looking Through You") to just plain weird ("Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"). It's also neat that there were songs I'm sure I'd heard before but don't recall ever hearing ("Boys").

Anyway, that shift demands my attention. Doubtless I will have more to say on this later.

...must use mike stand to do weird David Byrne gestures... the only thing that would make it better would be if they had my 2 favorite catchy TH songs, "Nothing But Flowers" and "Stay Up Late". Maybe later.

Woo!

Halp!

We're getting a truckload of flooring soon, and they plan to drive up and stand there while we unload it. "We" in this case meaning Eric, because I may have to be at the hotline protecting the unprotected. It's a bunch of 65 pound boxes, and Eric and I are many things, but strong like bull is not one of them. Can you help a brother out? There's probably at least pizza and beer in it for you, and swimming after, and lots of gratitude...

As to when, it's on its way, and we're going to be getting a call 24 hours before it arrives. I'm thinking next Wednesday, but I really don't know yet.

Unrelated note- Gorillaz, "Feel Good Inc." 99% vocal score on Hard, first try. Ha ha ha ha haaaa! Of course, the songs with rapping are easier. But they don't want me to sing "ass crack."
austin_tycho: crater (Trogdor)
Aww hell. Blur and Gorillaz. Stevie Wonder! Johnny Cash! "Under Pressure"! I think I'ma put that on my wish list.

WANT. I can finally sing harmony and have it count, for one thing, aaaand I can be Paul McCartney with a Rickenbacker bass. Sweet.
austin_tycho: crater (Trogdor)
Yesterday turned out to be one of those days that had nothing planned at the outset then ended up super-packed. I don't mind those usually; part of why I can be so planning-adverse sometimes is that I like to have a lot of wiggle-room for last-minute things.

I did my shift, then taught a class on Hermetic laws. Eh, not my favorite topic but some topics I love, and some I'm just passing on the info. It ended up running long, so there wasn't much afternoon left to me. Dave Huggles wanted to have a Rock Band event, and sometimes it's nice to have them here since there's more room and I can get intoxicated without worrying about a drive home. And that way we don't have to have friends to have a party, we can borrow Dave's friends! Okay, some of them are our friends too, but Dave was doing all the organizing, such as it was, we just provided the space.

Anyway, after the class I had only a little time to start cleaning the place before I had to depart. I went to a chiropractic appointment since my neck had been in such bad shape the day before; she popped it but good, then I visited with their new massage guy. Lest you become irate that your tax dollars are paying for me to get massages (by way of health insurance supplied by the state of Texas), this was that sort of massage where you don't really have the soft-focused Calgon-took-me-away feeling, but feeling closer to crying and cursing the guy as a sadistic bastard, which was really what I needed; it gets the job done. It almost seemed incongruous that he was playing Enya. But I think it's a law that they have to.

I barely had time to get home, take a shower, and leave for madrigals. Some folks in the choir have been trying for months to get me to go to this monthly medieval jam session... there kept being something else scheduled, but I wanted to at least make it once- they kept inviting me, and I don't know from madrigals, but why not, you know? Well, there were eight of us, average age about sixty, and I just completely sucked at it. These are folks who if you point at them in the store and say "sing an F sharp Mixolydian¹ scale!" they could. If you give me a starting pitch and then tell me to give you another pitch I can usually figure it out given enough time, but I was way out-classed by this group. Hey, I started out as an instrumentalist, knowing pitches was a subset of knowing what buttons to push, and not an independent skill usually taught. But they were very encouraging and insisted that I keep coming and that everyone sucks the first time, so I didn't feel like a complete loser.

By the time I got home, it was a pretty full house, and after getting some food and intoxicant in me, I jumped in to the Rock Band festivities. I divided up the evening between singing, playing bass, circulating, chatting one-on-one, and keeping Eric company. Parties aren't usually his thing and sometime he finds a place to hole up away from the noise but he seemed to enjoy himself and was more social than usual. Plus he's really cute when he gets liquored up. I got to meet some new people, catch up with some folks I didn't know too well or haven't seen recently, and visit with some of my favorite regulars, and overall it was an excellent time. I really hated to pull the plug around 2am, and it broke my heart when a spontaneous plan to go out and hit some 24-hour diner materialized but I had to stay home and be responsible and go to bed since I had to work at 8 this morning, but that's okay.

Now I probably ought to quit avoiding my afternoon tasks, which involve de-booking seven bookshelves in preparation for room painting. And we have a good bid and a floor material all but decided on, so the bedroom is quickly headed towards fabulousness.

¹ In making sure I spelled 'Mixolydian' correctly, Wikipedia tells me than songs which use that mode include 'Norwegian Wood' by the Beatles, 'Satisfaction' by the Stones, and the themes to both Star Trek: Next Gen and Katamari Damacy.

Have some cute. It's good for what ails ya.

I've been trying to play Rock Band bass on the 'hard' difficulty level; I tend to just zone out more when I'm playing bass in Rock Band than when I'm singing, and am not generally looking for a challenge. But some of the songs I know really, really well and decided to push things a bit. What differentiates hard from medium is that there are 5 buttons you could be asked to push- and the way your hand wraps around the controller (I'm reluctant to say 'instrument'), you have four fingers available. So you actually have to move your hand up and down the neck once you get to hard or expert levels of difficulty. Which means you have to think a lot more. Maybe I ought to think about my actual bass practice and work on pivoting my hand rather than sliding it up and down, like my teacher done tole me.

Anyway, most of the Cars songs I tried I did okay on; in the upper 80s for percentage of notes hit. They were all in the zero to one level of difficulty for bass (out of zero to six). I forget how I did on Foo Fighters' 'Monkey Wrench' (bass difficulty- three) but I made it through the song. What ate my lunch was Elvis Costello's 'Pump It Up'; the bass difficulty is supposedly one, but I have not managed to get more than about a third of the way through that one on hard without completely crashing and burning. *shakes fist*

Whiney emo setlist that's nevertheless a lot of fun to sing:
'That's What You Get' Paramore (4)
'Hysteria' Muse (1)
'Tempted' Squeeze (4)
'Chop Suey' System of a Down (6)

Not feeling especially emo today, but these are the songs what wanted to get sung. So there.

It has been a pleasantly full day.

I did my shift, which was a godawful bunch of hotel reviews (I'm telling you- waffles make everything okay) and then got ready for my bass lesson (more on that in a moment). I sped home to play some Guitar Hero with Stevie- he has buried the hatchet with GH, and though both of us agree that Rock Band is much better, GH is still fun. I finally got to sing 'Shiver', along with 'Little Wing' (Hendrix- came out the year I was born, so well-aspected), 'The One I Love' (R.E.M.), 'Trapped Under Ice' (Metallica) with 'Band on the Run' (Wings) immediately thereafter for contrast, and 'Hot For Teacher' (Van Halen).

Pixie came over and we completed Stage Two of the first batch of mead, which went much faster than Stage One- this involves adding another pint of honey plus a quart of water plus any other flavorings you decide to add. Mine's not looking so well, not sure what to do about that.

Threeve needed a ride from the scooter place and I was starving at that point, so we swung by to get Eric and on his recommendation went to Top Notch. Threeve wanted fried chicken and I'd initially thought Hoovers- but apparently they only sell fried chicken for brunch on the weekends. WTF? Anyway, Eric had heard that Top Notch has some good fried chicken. See, making good fried chicken is time-consuming so most places just do chicken tenders or nuggets or poppers or whatever-the-fuck. Not Top Notch. Their fried chicken is indeed the shizznit, apparently- I say this because gnawing meat off bones makes me a little queasy, but they also make a perfectly serviceable burger, and they have pretty awesome shakes too.

Then home, and time to walk my fat shake-loving ass around the block a couple of times. Now, more Battlestar Galactica.

The Mary Launt Memorial Setlist

"That's What You Get" Paramore
"Girl's Not Grey" AFI
"Sweetness" Jimmy Eat World
"Limelight" Rush

Okay, the last song doesn't really belong, but it was a four-song setlist and I saw 'I Love You Man' and I really wanted to sing fucking "Limelight", dammit.
austin_tycho: crater (Trogdor)
This set list is called the Mood Swing Setlist. Or, the Crying In Your Beer About A Breakup Then Picking Up A Chick At The Bar Where You Were Drinking Your Beer And Putting The Smoove On Her Setlist.

'Black'- Pearl Jam
'Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine - Pt 1'- James Brown
austin_tycho: crater (Trogdor)
I call this set "The Set That's Really Tough On Your Bassist, Especially If She Just Practiced For Like An Hour Or Something, And It Will Make Her Brain Go Kaboom And Additionally Be Rather Painful In Her Left Hand Especially, And I Don't Know Why I'm Bitching, I Am The Bassist So I Should Examine Why I Picked These Songs So Tell Me About Your Mother?"

Dani California- Red Hot Chili Peppers (3 difficulty on bass? Really, that's all?)
YYZ- Rush (4 difficulty on bass; I can buy that)

This was a fun set. But, ow.
austin_tycho: crater (Trogdor)
Rock Band released the funk pack. Thoughts:

Average White Band- "Pick Up the Pieces" This is boring, boring, boring on vocals. 90% tambourine and then saying "woo" and "pick up the pieces" a few times. Probably a lot more fun on bass. It's odd to hear a full horn section on a Rock Band song.
Earth Wind & Fire- "Shining Star" I've heard this one a zillion times since I was a kid, and thought I'd do a lot better at it than I did. I don't think I'm naturally very funky. Another big horn section piece. It was still fun; I've always liked this song.
James Brown- "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine - Pt 1" The highest level of difficulty on vocals... but once you hear the first couple of phrases, you pretty much have the whole song. James Brown sounds very... well, like James Brown, and even though I wasn't familiar with this song I think I did as well on this as I did on E, W, & F. Seems like I remember a Led Zeppelin song that talked about a bridge that echoes this; I wonder if I'm making that up. "Where's that confounded bridge?" 'The Crunge'? Anyone?

Of course, it also brings this to mind.

I've placed 21st overall as of this writing.

I'd do the bass battle this week, but it requires that I download 'Sugar Magnolia', and I'm sorry, I can't stand that song.
austin_tycho: crater (Trogdor)
New favorite set list for Rock Band- the Genderfuck Two-fer:

'I'm Just A Girl' No Doubt
'Sex Type Thing' Stone Temple Pilots ("I am a man, a man, I'll give ya somethin' that ya wont forget")

I can pull off Scott Weiland a lot better than I can sing like Gwen Stefani. Make of that what you will.
austin_tycho: crater (Jeff Buckley Emo)
Man, this job gets on my last nerve sometimes. Being yelled at by a crazy lady for a half-hour lacks fun. Believe it or not, the conspiracy goes all the way to the top, and I'm just another white girl who won't help her out. Yeah, well, lady, I don't like you either.

The sweet tea from Wendy's- insufficiently sweet. If I'm going to go ahead and fall off the wagon and get sweet tea, make it worth my while. Now Grandy's, they could make some goddamn sweet tea. We called it hummingbird food. So good.

The whole Texas Flood album by Stevie Ray Vaughan came out on Rock Band yesterday. They had a battle that they initially let anyone in on, which became problematic because one of the songs had no vocal track so when Stevie (the prof, not the dead one) and I tried to do battle (he on guitar, me on the mic) we'd get through 'Texas Flood' (and quite handily) but then it would lock up on 'Rude Mood'. I tried it alone on guitar after Stevie went back to work, and managed to get in 36th place but they've since fixed it and made the battle specifically guitar-only and I'm sure I've been knocked way down the list since then.

Singing blues is fun, even though I can't really say I have much to sing the blues about. Singing it with no consonants seems to approximate SRV's vocal style a lot more than I thought it would. Eric tells me it's boring as shit on the drums, incidentally, but a heart attack on guitar. Bass is fun, lots of walking lines that are complicated enough to be interesting but repetetive enough not to cause my head to explode.

I wish I was not at work. I would like to be outside.
austin_tycho: crater (Tokie Wartooth)
Maya is the noisiest cat when she cleans herself, which is odd because she's so jumpy you'd think she'd be quieter. But no, she slurps and snorts so loud you can hear it across the room.

I just broke the top 100 in a Rock Band battle of the bands; 2 metal songs on Expert ('Our Truth' and 'Colony of Birchmen', a song that just makes no damn sense). I'm currently at 89; who knows if I'll stay there, but even if I don't still it's a first. Go me!
