Jul. 22nd, 2005 11:42 amI really amuse myself at how much of a drawl I get when I'm talking to a caller who has a drawl. Neither of my parents are native Texans, so my normal sober pattern of speech is pretty news-caster bland, though I do think "y'all" is a perfectly legitimate word. But if I get tired, or drunk, or surrounded by Texish, I start sliding into the drawl.
I have noticed that if I don't like who I'm talking to, I don't do it so much. But if I'm feeling sympathetic, or it's just some schlub doing his job (like this last caller) as opposed to some trailer rat yelling at me because them kids don't need to be in that household if their daddy cain't pay their chahld support, then I catch myself sounding more countrified. I think I'm doing subconsciously to help them feel comfortable.
I want some poo donuts.
It's going to be a long day at work. I'm suffering from the ennui today.
Hub's going to a Go tournament tomorrow, leaving me with a Saturday on my own, which I haven't had for a long time. I wonder what I'll do. Maybe get poo donuts.

Jul. 22nd, 2005 02:48 pmHelp me figure this out.
Okay, so I love n, where n is a type of music that I don't know the name of. I think of it as 'desert wailing.' It's all over the Children of Dune series, and Sting had somelady dude doing it on "Desert Rose" (he's singing in Arabic, apparently- I found that much out). Paul Simon did it a little at the beginning of "You're The One." It's on Flesh and Bone's "Skeleton Woman", though no one probably has heard that one except for me. Is it Arabic? Egyptian? Moroccan? Middle Eastern? And what are some good artists I should check out? I could go trolling websites in languages I don't read and take stabs in the dark, but I bet someone out there knows more or less what I'm talking about and can help me out. I'm not sure if I like it by itself or if I just like how Western musicians incorporate it into their stuff, but I'll never find out if I don't even know what it's called.
