I really amuse myself at how much of a drawl I get when I'm talking to a caller who has a drawl. Neither of my parents are native Texans, so my normal sober pattern of speech is pretty news-caster bland, though I do think "y'all" is a perfectly legitimate word. But if I get tired, or drunk, or surrounded by Texish, I start sliding into the drawl.

I have noticed that if I don't like who I'm talking to, I don't do it so much. But if I'm feeling sympathetic, or it's just some schlub doing his job (like this last caller) as opposed to some trailer rat yelling at me because them kids don't need to be in that household if their daddy cain't pay their chahld support, then I catch myself sounding more countrified. I think I'm doing subconsciously to help them feel comfortable.

I want some poo donuts.

It's going to be a long day at work. I'm suffering from the ennui today.

Hub's going to a Go tournament tomorrow, leaving me with a Saturday on my own, which I haven't had for a long time. I wonder what I'll do. Maybe get poo donuts.

Poo donuts are those chocolate sour cream donuts that have more of a crunchy texture than regular donuts. They have a rather disturbing 'extruded' look to them and are dark brown, sometimes with a little glaze on them. Yum!

I drawl all the time, but big time when I'm around family. Yansa's coworkers say he's started drawling from being around me.
Awww corruption!

I can't believe that made me sort of want donuts, even when you put the word poo in front, and I don't know what you're talking about. Warning signs I have a donut problem? ;)

I've noticed something similar with me - and since I'm on the Mid-South team, I get drawling callers a lot. What I'm finding is that there's a sort of Warm Southern speech pattern that's not really an accent, and when I'm speaking to someone who does this, I pick up a little bit of it myself. Which is odd, as I'm from Houston (not much for drawls, really, not compared with, say, Mobile) and my parents are New Yorkers. It's not something I have ever, ever done in casual speech. And I still refuse to ever say y'all. But something happens when I'm on the phone with these people. I'm not sure whether to be amused or horrified.

It's natural for some folk, me included, to pick up on someone else's accent if I'm trying to a) get something done, or b) empathize with them.
