Misanthropic? Me? I am overall quite optimistic, I think, but I also believe that all of our environmental problems trace back to the fact that there are too many of us. I think people should have fewer or no babies for awhile until we get this all figured out. So while I mostly like people on an individual basis, I think the planet is suffering from too much of a good thing. But I’m not advocating mass suicide, or exposing infants, or the Modest Proposal. Just a voluntary drop in fertility for awhile. That’s the biggest misconception of one of my favorite organizations that I’m reluctant to promote, the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement (VHEMT)- which is all about having fewer babies (thus the first word- Voluntary!) and nothing else. And I don’t even think we should all go (which makes me a Supporter rather than a Volunteer, according to how they define things), just put the brakes on things for now. For the more radical stuff, you’d have to surf over to the Church of Euthanasia, a group who’s titanic cajones I admire, but don’t really support. The owner/moderator of VHEMT is not at all what people expect; from being on their mailing list for years I found him to be a really funny guy with an almost saintly sort of quiet wisdom. And his arguments are pretty persuasive. I like him a lot better than the guys at Negative Population Growth, who seem to be focusing on immigration laws. I understand the idea behind that but I think they’re missing the point. Oh, well- now I’m out. Boo!
