Finally I have a date scheduled for that stoopid surgical procedure. They were supposed to call me last Monday about it, and never bothered to get around to it. So I got the call Wednesday or Thursday (it wasn't yesterday, and I'm sleepy), and it's going to be on 8/1. I suppose it's a good sign that they're dragging ass. :P

That night I finally got the telescope out that I had traded [livejournal.com profile] scorpionis for. I just seem to have been busy, or it just didn't occur to me. We had a fun time figuring out how to put it all together, and it sure is a lot easier to lug around than my old one. We checked out the Moon- very neat, I can see why people learn the names of craters now. It's so they can say "Ooh, look at the shadows in Tejbrvousdhdgu!" as opposed to "Ooh, look at the shadows in that crater! That one there, on the Moon! With the shadows that look neat! Aaarrgh!" We also checked out Venus, which was sort of boring. It's in a gibbous phase, I think, so it's just another white blob. But I checked out Jupiter, and saw mooooooons! I don't know which ones, but I saw 2 of them, maybe 3. Hub could not see them but he could still see Jupiter, with its cute little bands.

Remember fucked-up house day (6/9/02)? Well, it turned out to be a blocked line in the a/c, so a/c guy came, snaked it out, poured bleach down it and voila. The carpet in the little closet got torn out, and the linoleum in the utility room was a bit stinky too, but it's all dried out. So insurance guy comes, and starts in with the tape measure. He measures everything in the house, then says that the carpet will have to be replaced. OK, I'm thinking, we figured that. It wouldn't be worth it. But no, he means that all the carpet that was attached to the carpet in that little closet and not in a separate room, which means the carpet in the living room, dining room, hallway, the stairs, and the hallway on the 2nd floor. And the linoleum in the utility room, and thus all the linoleum attached to it- my computer room, the kitchen, and the pantry. Score!

We then decided to start looking at options for flooring. We don't want carpet, or linoleum. So we checked out a couple of places that sell tile and Pergo and stuff. But hub got on a concrete kick. He did a little looking around and decided that nothing could possibly be better than stained concrete. It got to be a joke with us- him singing the praises of concrete at every turn, while I was still skeptical. He sent me articles extolling the virtues of stained concrete. I teased him about it until he stopped. But I'm pretty much sold, I guess. The only bad things I've heard about it are things like it will break your water pipe if you drop it, and if there's an earthquake it'll crack. Meh.

So he researched it a bit. Since our original concrete probably has carpet tack holes and unsightly blemishes all over it, we'd have to get a new concrete 'skin' but even so it still looks really cheap- this is a happy thing, since the insurance company only sent us $3800. It's really cool to hold a check in your hands for that much, but when you're looking at redoing a whole bunch of floor, it doesn't go far. We've pretty much decided that we'll see if we can just do the hallway/living room/dining room downstairs, and all the linoleum, and leave the stairs and the upper hallway for another time. We want to do the master bedroom anyway, and it'd make more sense to re-do that all at once. And besides, we have no idea what to do with the stairs, you can't concrete them. Or the upstairs, for that matter. We'll come up with something.

It's neat, because I'd always dreamed of having a house of my own to do whatever I wanted with. But hub has dreamt of moving to a home in the country, so there wasn't a real sense of permanence. But since we're both working part-time, we've decided the decreased stress is well-worth the delay in the country house, so we may as well settle in to this one and make it ours. I'm pleased in ways I can't convey, and hub has gone on a decorating tear, and has a million really interesting ideas for what to do, all the way from floor options to the color of accent pillows. This should be fun.

Oh, and thanks to [livejournal.com profile] yansa for my new user icon. :)

Yer welcome! Thanks for adding me back, too. Naw, there's no crater named that to my knowledge- I just mashed on the keyboard and that's what came out.
