Someone pointed me to an interesting article about chocolate- a specific brand, Noka, which is made (or more accurately, bought from France, melted and formed into tiny squares) in Plano (a city north of Dallas- I used to live there). Noka chocolate is absurdly expensive, and this article breaks down what you get exactly for your chocolate dollar (or several of them). The answer is, to cut to the chase, not much at all. "1,300% of retail. Think about that for a second. If you bought a gallon of milk with that markup, it would cost you more than forty bucks."
In any event, in setting up what a screw-job Noka is, the writer included a lot of cool information about how chocolate is made, history, judging quality, and all that. Then there are suggestions of what to get that's a better value. It looks like Chocosphere is the place to go.
