The winter solstice happens today at 5:23pm, twelve minutes before sunset. So, like I have for many years now, I will stay up all night and welcome what to me is the first sunrise of the new year tomorrow at 7:24am.
It's going to be tough this year. I haven't gotten really great sleep the last couple of nights, and I got up before 7 this morning to get to work. Some years I can nap during the day to prepare myself, but it'll be a 24 hour haul this year.
I've referred to it as 'holding vigil' but that implies that I'm kneeling in front of an altar in silent prayer for fourteen hours, and that's not really the case. I hang out with Eric until he goes to bed, and then I wrap presents, read the interweb, and generally fuck around. Gordon says he's going to come by around 3:30-4, and we'll either hit a 24-hour eatery like Katz or Kerbey Lane, or drive around, or something. He has a PS3, but the only game I like on the thing is Sudoku. It seems kind of silly to play Sudoku on a PS3. Anyway, then we go find somewhere that has a view of the horizon, and quietly watch the Sun come up (if it's clear). Then I crash. Then I get up and start getting the house ready for the Yule ritual.
I'm already sleepy. It's going to be really hard this year, I fear. If you want to give me a call, I'll be up. Call my cell though; Eric's got to do that sleep and work the next day thing.
