Yesterday was IKEA day.
It was not off to a great start. I don't know what I have done to piss my body off so much. Last week my left knee was hurting and popping. Then that went away, and the adhesions started bothering me. Then they weren't so much yesterday, but there was a nasty pain deep in my right hip joint and shooting down my leg. I guess I need to stretch before I boogie these days. Anyway I ended up getting up at 8am and taking a shower, since walking around seemed to help it and I wanted to work as much of it out before we braved the IKEA on a weekend.
We checked out the free breakfast the hotel offered, and it was pretty well appointed which surprised us both. So we chowed down, then went back and packed up the room. It didn't take long- I always over-pack, but this was just a one-night stay so I kept it to a reasonable amount. We managed to find the IKEA through the maze that is Houston highway construction and looked for our bed, as well as doing our usual browsing for anything else that catches our eye and relieves the cheap early eighties drab our home was built with and replaces it with cheap Scandinavian drab. Yay!
We took some time out in the middle to have a bite to eat at the infamous IKEA cafeteria. I was shocked because the food was actually pretty tasty, high quality (they had a veggie mix that had yellow carrots in it!) and a lot cheaper than I would've thought. So, mini-restaurant review gives IKEA füd a big thumbs-up.
We got a couple of little things, and the bed we were after. The big headboard with all the shelving only came in queen, and the chest for linens turned out to be a lot smaller than we thought. So we opted to get another vertical bookcase/cabinet thing like the ones we've already gotten, and place it in a nook next to the bed and use that for linen storage and other things. But we managed to get the bed and all this other stuff for less than half what similar beds were selling for at the furniture places here. We packed it all in and Eric started putting together the cabinet thing while I went to help Friend F. with last-minute packing and getting her step-dad from the airport.
She rented a truck and had it all packed up, and he was flying in so that he could drive the truck, towing her busted car, up to their place in Denver where she'll be staying for all of the surgeries and recovery. He has to be back to work on Monday, so he wanted to leave pretty much as soon as he got to her place. I helped with a little last-minute packing and getting ready for the trip (about a 16 hour drive). We got the car on the towing thing, and had a tearful hug and she was on her way.
I will miss her. I hope she can come back to Austin someday. Since step-dad is allergic to cats she was only able to take one of her three, and another friend is boarding her 2 others so hopefully we'll see her again for a visit anyway.
Eric had the cabinet thing mostly done and was finishing up one of the night stands when I got home. I was exhausted and crashed soon after.
