There's this lady in south Austin who has a tchotchke shop. She also really loves Tempurpedic mattresses, so among all the jewelry cabinets and t-shirts she has a couple of mattresses to jump on, and she is a distributor. You know, you go to her and she orders the thing from the factory and they send it straight to your house. So this one couple ordered one, thinking it would be the magic pooky that would fix back problems that probably require surgery. When it wasn't, they returned the mattress to tchotchke lady. She offered to sell it to anyone for cost, which is half the price which is substantial; Tempurpedic mattresses are expensive. When we heard about this we ran to the store and put down a deposit, contingent on the thing not being covered with feces. We've been thinking for some time that those fancy-pants space foam mattresses sound cool and have been working up the courage to spend a ridiculous amount of money on one... but now we only have to spend half a ridiculous amount! It's been delivered to tchotchke lady now, and we'll probably go by tomorrow and arrange for it to be delivered to our house sometime next week.
Here's the thing. It's a king-sized mattress, which means we need to get a new bed. Incidentally, anyone want a really nice queen-sized platform bed from Copenhagen furniture with one matching nightstand and a really good mattress? I can make you such a deal!
So we need a new platform bed. The one we have now was a showroom model or we wouldn't have been able to afford it. Copenhagen has nice stuff, but their prices are insane and not even in the fun way. We also looked at Urban Living, and they had one that we liked but it was also hella expensive.
The thing is, I have fussy requirements for what I want. The one we have has a headboard that's basically a narrow hinged box that you can stuff pillows and linens and whatall in. I like having that storage. Also the base is a box that sits on the floor, as opposed to 4 pegs that would leave a space under the bed the cats would barf on. Not cool. I also want a very pale-colored wood.
Online options were looking pretty expensive too. I found these plans online, but we don't have the tools and couldn't find a carpenter.
We looked at the IKEA option, but weren't seeing anything that matched our requirements. Then it occurred to me, we could get this bed, which comes in the color I want, and is sure a good price. Friend F. has this bed, and it's sturdy. The issues of the open space could be solved by a couple of boards nailed to close it off. Eric even suggested hinging them so we can make under the bed a storage area without giving the cats access. We could even stain the boards some interesting color. These night stands are nice and cheap, and if we want more storage we could get this matching chest. We'd still be paying a lot less than probably any other option. This is nice, since we can probably keep using the comforter but we'll definitely have to get some new sheets.
Malm!!!!!!!!!!!1
We're going to Houston next month and will probably buy the thing there. As I've probably mentioned elsewhere, I don't want to go anywhere near the IKEA that's getting ready to open in Round Rock until after the new year. The crowds there will make me cry.
Eric says if we fuck it apart, he'll just buy the tools and build the other one. He's been wanting an excuse to learn carpentry anyway.
