Hey, I went to see the new Star Wars movie! I think it was opening night here, though I've heard a bunch of people had managed to see it already. Anyway the wait in line was a boring, boring, boring hour long- but fortunately we got pretty good seats with a minimal amount of distractions. People cheered when the movie started.
It was purdy. Scenery, long shots of cities and planets, aliens, ships, all that- well-done. Beautiful.
The acting stunk on ice. People were stiff, delivery was lackluster, and some of the lines were absurd. The story was convoluted, requiring all this stupid exposition. The original and Empire had this wonderful mythical quality that even 7 y.o. little Mielikki could follow; this was like some kind of Clancy-esque political intrigue drag.
Padme pissed me off, and Anakin was a turd. I wanted to slap him. He had 2 speeds- petulant, and arrogant. He whined about Obi, who wasn't all that bad and couldn't have been worse than when he was a slave, for crying out loud. He delivered all these wretched declarations of love to a woman who hasn't seen him for 10 years, and got pissy when she didn't melt into his arms. And was she on Xanax? She seemed to get a lot of mileage out of staring morosely into space. Ani loves Padme, Padme stares morosely. Ani's mom croaks, Padme stares morosely. Ani kills scads of innocent sandpeople, Padme stares morosely. There was dialog, but they sure didn't seem to communicate. Then suddenly she's madly in love with him. For the love of dog, WHY? And don't the Jedi have any shrinks or something? Kid's mom dies, he kills sandfolk, he moons all over Padme. Let's send him off alone with her! Wha...?! If they are a bit surpised when she turns up married and preggo, they deserve to be chased off by the bad guys, buncha idiots.
The saber fights were fine. Yeah, yeah, Yoda fights well, even though he is small. I thought it looked a bit over-done, but the audience cheered loudly at this point. I think hub should photo-shop a picture of Mace's saber with 'Bad Motherfucker' on the handle, but he didn't get much fighting in, just a lot of 'what should we do, Yoda?' Maybe for Ep.3.
They flesh out the Boba Fett story a lot, which will make all you Fett-heads happy. I still don't understand you guys, though.
The general agreement amongst the friends is that it was fine- much better than Ep.1, and probably even a bit better than Jedi. But still not as good as the original or Empire. Go see it, and hope Lucas lets someone else direct Ep.3.
