I've been listening to the copy of John Mayer's Continuum that could be had from Clear Channel's site. I have sent the pirates forth to find a copy that doesn't have CC's shitting all over the music- they announce every minute or so over the music that you're hearing this preview by the grace of Clear Channel's wonderfulness, all hail Clear Channel! So I long for the day when I can hear this music as is.
I love just about every song on this album. The one I like the least, believe it or not, is the Jimi Hendrix cover Bold as Love. I know I may be killed for this, but I just don't much care for Hendrix. I think he was trying too hard to sound clever or poetic sometimes.
Slow Dancing in a Burning Room makes me want to cry. And I think I'll add The Heart of Life to the list of songs I want played at my funeral.

I suppose it's my belief that only through trying to sound clever or poetic can you achieve (if you're lucky, more than once) cleverness or poetry, and if you can avoid listening to the failures, you can still find joy in the successes. I think he got it right at least on the song 'Castles Made of Sand'. I still don't know why people think 'All Along the Watchtower' is such a good song.
I write this mostly because I'm at work and I'm out of fun internet stuff to do.
So I guess my main question would be: who would win in a celebrity deathmatch between Dave Matthews and John Mayer?

But I also enjoy listening to crap, so it's a matter of taste. It's not like I hate Jimi, more like I'm indifferent.
Dave plays Watchtower at every concert I've been to, and my honest reaction is usually "oh, this again. Whee." I think that was Bob Dylan, though. I'm not all that fond of him either, mainly because his vocal style annoys me (same with Neil Young, though I agree with his politics).
John and Dave deathmatch... hmm. While I think John would be a scrappy fighter with youth on his side, I'll have to go with Dave. His greater experience and less of a need to be liked I think would tip the scales. Plus he has the stronger stoner fu. Listening to him talk about bonobos or shitting himself in South Africa can't be matched.
