Last night we watched a good movie- Generations (the Star Trek movie). Let the shrieking accusations of "nerd!!" roll forth. There are 2 things I like about the movie:
The map room scene. I think it's called the 'astrocartography room' or some fancy-ass term like that. It's where you can go and get a planetarium-like 3-D effect map of anywhere in the known Universe, where you can zoom in on things, look at them from all angles, and the like. It's a gorgeous scene, and I want one for my bedroom.
The creepiest scene in a sci-fi movie: blowing up the Sun. This is when Picard and the Clockwork Orange guy are on the surface of the Californian desert planet, and CO guy shoots a torpedo that causes the Sun to... stop. Now, ignoring the fact that it probably would've taken a lot longer for it to become apparent, there was just something so horrifying about seeing the Sun go dark. Not because it was setting, or there were clouds or an eclipse- watching it go out. And if that was our Sun, there'd be nothing we could do but sit there and go 'well, we're all just fucked.' Not 'The Stand' fucked, or nuclear war fucked, when theoretically some humans could survive... but inescapably, everything's gonna die all-out fucked. *shudder*
Oh, there are inconsistencies- Picard had said on the TV show that he really didn't like children, and didn't know how to relate to them. Now, I know he'd just lost his brother's family, and was feeling all mortal and crap, and he'd grown as a person blah blah blah, but his idea of heaven is a little Victorian girl plastered with bows pecking him on the cheek saying "Thonk you for the dolly, duddee!"?? Bleh! And it looked way too British, it shoulda looked more French. But hey, it's a minor quibble, I still liked the movie.
