We tried to watch 'Waterworld' after class was over- they showed it earlier, but I had to turn it off when students showed up. So for whatever reason they rebroadcast it later that night. I wasn't all that interested; I kept flipping between that and a show on one of the music channels about top videos of the 80's. It was amusing to see some of them again, though VH1 Classic has been good and video-intensive and commercial-free. The commentary by Emilio Estevez was really annoying, but the interviews with the artists and others about the videos were fun to watch. I was surprised that 'Billie Jean' was number one; if Michael Jackson had to get it, I would have thought 'Beat It' would've won.

And, if he didn't get it that Madonna would get it, but not for 'Like a Prayer', which was a pretty cool video, but not the most popular one. I hate Madonna so much- there was controversy over that video (featuring burning crosses etc.) and she was interviewed about it, saying very smugly "If people are open-minded they'll realize what a swell video this is" or words to that effect. I do think that a performance artist has some responsibility to communicate their vision to the audience effectively, and if they fail it's at least partially the artist's problem. Additionally, it's not a stretch to believe that Madonna used the burning crosses and all just because it would piss people off, and then get all bitchy and call people that didn't like it 'close minded.' It's all about getting attention. At least own when you're an attention whore. :P

She bugged me another time when they were having a point-counterpoint interview many years ago between her and some less pretty musician- Tom Petty, or Bob Dylan or maybe Springsteen, I forget. Anyway, they were griping about how music videos was going to slant people's musical taste to people who aren't necessarily pretty performance artists in favor of people that look good on camera but may not have a drop of musical talent (and it looks like this has happened, to some extent). Her counter-point involved her just smirking and saying "well, if you're a musician you're a performer and if you can't handle video then tough shit for you." Or words to that effect. Yeah, I like a couple of her songs but as a person- she really strikes me as self-centered and snooty.

So anyway, we tried to watch Waterworld, which lasted through the top 20 videos and kept going. It had started at 11pm, I think. I got sleepy and conked out around 1:30am, and hub stuck with it for another whole hour and conked out. He didn't even make it to the end. Christ. I assume they found land and lived happily ever after. Feh.

Sunday was a nice lazy day.

Today I work (jarring minor chord). They offered a shift where I could be off Sundays permanently (and work Mon-Wed, or maybe Tue-Thurs) but we were supposed to put our request in by Friday. I hemmed and hawed about it, and just plain forgot about it for a couple of days. Finally I called Friday and tried to talk to someone about it, but I wasn't able to get ahold of anyone so I just sent in my request by email today. I think I'm too late, though, and they gave it to someone else. The person that is in charge isn't in today, so I don't know for sure. It would sure be nice to not have to take leave every time I want to go camping over the weekend.
