Yesterday was fun and different. Well, not the first part- we spent a lot of the day cleaning and messing with the pool and mundane stuff like that. I did plant some onions in pots; hub wanted to try growing food, and we eat lots of onions. Playing in the dirt was fun. Sometimes I wish I had the time and smarts to devote to more gardening, but there are only so many hours in the day so I retain my amateur status. I tend to be bad and forget to water them or take them in when it freezes, although the mountain laurel I tried to grow- that wasn't my fault. It was eaten by caterpillars, the little bastards.
Anyway. So Bob has been inviting us to see him spin fire at Elysium. Hub and I are so very much not club people, but Bob's been bugging us and gave us free passes. Additionally, I have this wonderful doumbek and haven't had a chance to play it at all this year- and apparently lots of drummers sometimes show up. So off we went, me with my drum in hand. We couldn't find parking, though I didn't think we looked very hard. Hub decided we should just go ahead and park at a garage he was familiar with- the problem being that it was quite a hike from where the club was. But he carried my drum so I was only able to get away with a minimum of bitching. :) It was a nice night anyway.
We got there and since I had a drum I got in for free, and hub used a pass. There were maybe a dozen people there at the most the entire time we were there- it looked like more like 7-8 most of the time. Of course no drummers showed up, and the music was (as is typical in clubs) deafeningly loud, so I was not inspired to drum. But it was fun watching people dance, plus it was good trance music and they were playing hentai on the TV. This is my kind of club. It wasn't too smoky, either, which is my other usual gripe, and what smoke there was tended to be from cloves, which is less offensive. Bob and
todfox were there, so we all hung out and talked for a bit.
todfox seemed kind of subdued, which I mistook for him being unhappy but it wasn't the case. We sat together and watched a bit of dancing and fire spinning. Bean was there too, though I hadn't immediately recognized her. What a great people watching opportunity!
A woman came over and told me she thought I had great energy, and struck up a conversation. I have fairly bad hearing due to going to a lot of very loud concerts in my, uh, youth, so I had to lean really close to her to hear her. I think she thought I was hitting on her, though, and she started touching me a lot. Nice to know I still got it, but when the guys decided to go out for a smoke and to chat I followed. I think hub was disappointed, hoping I'd set up a threesome- sorry Charlie! She was cute enough, but if there is any bi in me at all she wasn't triggering it. Ah, well.
We hung out and chatted for a good while, and a couple of other Flipside type people came out to talk too. Bob was fairly wasted, I think, and was louder and more attention-whorey than usual. It's usually amusing, but he kept grabbing Bean by the hair and wrestling with her. She obviously enjoyed it, but it made me squirm a bit- it looked a little too rough for my comfort level. But like I said they both looked like they were having fun, so I ignored it.
Hub was a cheap date. He doesn't drink much normally- a glass of port here and there at most. Well, tonight he had 2 long island iced teas- and pounded the first one down pretty quickly. He became very drunk right away, which is fun because when he gets drunk it's that sort of 'I love you guys' smiling laughing sort of drunk. He hates crowds, but there wasn't a crowd and he knew half the people that were there, practically, so he seemed to really enjoy himself. We went back in and watched Bob and Bean spin a couple more times. They are both very skilled, and to make it even beter they both obviously love doing it- it seems to give them a big adrenaline rush.
todfox took some pictures with his digital camera- if he posts them I'll link to them later. But in the meantime, here is what fire spinning looks like, with pics of both Bob and Bean spinning.
After that things started to wind down, and it was 2am so the club was closing. We said our goodbyes and began the long hike back to the car. It was still very nice out, but had that damp early morning feel to the air. We were both pretty awake, and hungry, so we decided to grab some food. All-night restaurant options are limited. We first went to Jim's, and chatted with an amazingly profane waitress, in the sense that she said 'shit' and 'fuck' a lot. I've never heard a waitress get quite so salty, but it didn't bother me at all- it was pretty funny, really. Sadly, they were only doing the breakfast menu, and we were more in the mood for dinner food. We mentioned this to the waitress, who tried to think of dinner food she could make for a second, then said "No, sorry, you're just shit out of luck." and gave us directions to the nearest Denny's. We went there, and got burgers and talked about how bad for us it was, but we were having such fun we didn't mind. The air just has such a different quality that late at night; it's sort of misty and the traffic is almost nil, with all the traffic lights on flash. We got home around 4am and fell almost immediately asleep.
I just got another invite from Bob to come drum, because at New and Full Moons they go to the tunnels (see link above) and spin fire, and lots of drummers supposedly show up. We have a cookout planned for my grove, but after that I may give it another try. I want to drum, dang it!
