We woke up yesterday and packed up our room. We left and headed into Houston proper after a nice stay and made our way to the mega-jumbo-huge Ikea after the traditional Houston visit Waffle House breakfast.
We had a list of things we wanted, including light fixtures that probably cost 1/10 what the ones we have were originally. However, the ones we have suck and are polished brass with little candle flame lightbulbs and we hate them since they don't go with anything. So we got these very plain ones (Lock! and Edsta!) for the hallway into the kitchen and the entryway. Hub found a reading lamp at last (Lista!) that took a regular bulb rather than a halogen- so he could plunk a compact fluorescent in it. He also found one of those shaving mirrors on an accordion arm ($10) and I found a watering can for my violets ($4) since the garden window makes reaching them a little more tricky.
I grabbed some picture frames too; I have an idea for an Andy-Warhol-esque collage of pictures of my kitty.
The big ticket items included a kitchen shelfy thing that would hold all the little appliances we don't use regularly; the bread machine, the steamer, the coffee maker, and all that. We wanted something tall but not wide. We found a very nice inexpensive shelf (Gorm!) that fit the bill quite nicely. It's unfinished pine so we might even stain it; we have a bunch of blue stain leftover from hub's table project that should do the trick. We also got a couple of baskets for things like onions or bags of cereal, and a peg rack for hanging pots and whatnot.
The biggest ticket item(s) was the bedroom setup. I have a rickety stereo cabinet that I've had since 1985 that needed to be retired; it's been holding up my stereo, VCR, DVD, and the TV and cable box. I was hoping to incorporate some shelfy things, since the bedroom is littered with several bookhenges. It didn't make sense to do a whole entertainment center (and it would've been too expensive anyway) but we got a nice set-up, I think. Two birch-veneer-looking bookcases (Kilby!) and the best of all, a cabinet (Magiker! by designer Tord Björklund!- that one, but half as tall) that has more birch-veneer-looking sides and glass doors.
Hub assembled the cabinet last night, and we started with some major rearranging in the bedroom. It's going to make things look completely different. By the way, I continue to be disgusted with carpet and how much crap it collects. Anyway, we moved almost everything around- the dresser to a new wall, got rid of a TV cart I was using as a knick-knack table, ditched a 15 year old coffee table and made a short little platform for my 10g aquarium, and moved around a lot of artwork on the walls as well. More moving around will occur as the bookshelves get assembled, and I look forward to getting all the dang books off the floor.
