Hub and I had a vacation planned for this past weekend from several months back. So off we went to the Woodlands, a nice piney suburb of Houston, to see the Dave Matthews Band. We made no specific plans, other than to show up before the concert, check into the room we'd reserved at a nearby Marriott, and visit the local Ikea the next day and pick up some house things, and be back home before we had to be at work today.

We got up and had a leisurely breakfast with Gordon. I was feeling like hell, actually, and doped myself up with cold medicine. The last time we took a vacation trip to Houston I had a cold, come to think of it. Hub was kind enough to drive, and to purchase a dingus that transmits the iPod over the radio, so we wouldn't have to listen to the cassette adapter rattle and wheeze for 3 hours. Fry's was packed, and I was in a "I hate people" mood which did not bode well. We packed slowly and ended up getting on the road close to 3pm. Rather than take the route suggested by Yahoo which would have taken us into Houston and then north to the Woodlands (which is 20 miles away from 610) we took a shortcut, and got there a little before 6. I took a nap on the way up, and felt quite a lot better.

We checked in and settled in, and dined at a nearby Luby's, where hub had his favorite- bandsaw fish, and I had a pretty fabulous slice of cherry pie. I think it was the first time I'd ever eaten at a Luby's. There was no shuttle to the Woodlands Pavillion where the concert was and the lady at the front desk said it was a 'short walk'. Well, if you are out of shape and you have a cold and you are in Houston where the humidity is a thousand percent, a mile seems like forever, but we made it. We timed it well; got there after the opening act which neither of us cared about and before DMB was on. Hub was kind enough to buy me a shirt, too. We collapsed in our seats.

We settled in- even though I got online to buy tickets as soon as they were on sale, we still ended up waaaaaaaaay in the back, but still in chairs at least and not on the lawn. The concert was pretty energetic, and had great lights accompanying it. I didn't stand up for the whole thing, just being too tired but I could still hear just fine. They did many songs from the new album (which I'm not really all that fond of, but still- bad DMB still beats any country western and most rap music, IMHO) and also stuff from every other album too. Dave thanked Houston twice for setting such a great example for the rest of the world as far as the recent NOLA suckiness, but didn't say a lot. It's the last week of the summer tour, so he's probably pooped. Which was too bad, listening to him talk in that mush-mouthed smiling ramble of his is one of the benefits of seeing them live, but what the hell. I also forgot how many beer drinking "wooooooooooooooo"-yelling dumb frat boys like DMB, but at least they seemed happy rather than assholish (though we did get yelled at as we were walking to the arena). They played 'til after 11 and then we started the long trudge to our temporary home. It was a little cooler at least (still and humid though- ecccch) and we got back around midnight and took a shower and crashed.
