Besides good board games and freaky pr0n, Germans also make good shoes. I got my new Birkenstocks yesterday from eBay. I was lucky enough to get them for under $40, and the guy threw in a pair of Extra Special Birkensocks because I am so wonderful and stuff. Okay, he did it because I did the 'buy it now' thing, instead of bidding in an auction. The stupid thing was, he had one pair for $35 in buy it now, and another pair in an auction. I put in a max bid of $35 on the auction pair, and when I got outbid I just bought the buy it now pair and laughed at the people that bid up the auction pair over $45. You is dum! The seller is "theshoeplanet", incidentally, if you're curious.
So, breathless from the auction play-by-play, you might wonder about the shoes themselves. They're black with brown trim and a bumpy tire-tread-like bottom, sort of like hiking shoes in sandal form. They are very similar to my old pair except they have a strap around the back of the heel, and they fasten with velcro instead of buckles. I'm not overly fond of velcro, but they don't seem to make the ones I had before any longer and this was the closest thing they had. They do the job, though, and they're very comfortable.
The socks... the socks. I tend not to be one of those people who wears socks with sandals. If it's cold enough to need socks, I usually just wear boots. But these are Extra Special Birkensocks! Made from special fibers from space that wick away moisture! Normally a $16 value! So I'm wearing them today because I can. They're nice, I suppose, but what I didn't notice when I opened the package last night or when I put them on this morning is that they're not black... they're navy.
I'm wearing black and brown sandals and navy socks.
It's a good goddamn thing I haven't been invited to the White House today.
