We watched '30 Days', the show done by the Supersize Me guy. It's the same premise as the movie, kinda- someone(s) does something that's really foreign to them for 30 days. Last night a couple of Manhattanites who proclaimed that they basically don't give a rat's ass about the environment went to live at Dancing Rabbit, and off-the-grid green commune.
I hope that if I were to ever be on this show (probably be plopped into a über-Christian family) that I would endure it without as much ridicule and complaining as the woman. Oh, I wanted to smack her. She even complained that they were using 7th Generation glass cleaner and not products whose name she recognized. Jesus, lady!
I could handle pooping in a bucket, and non-daily showering, and driving a car that runs on fryer grease, and using off-brands that are nice to the planet. I think the lack of constant internet availability would make me crazy (though they aren't total Luddites- they said they had a computer with an internet connection in the 'Common House'), and unless I could drag hub along I'd probably get sick of the food pretty quickly. And I'd miss crap.
Speaking of which, we got some Poppycock at the Walgreen's and made the mistake of eating the whole bag. Then we made the further mistake of looking at the ingredient list. It wasn't a huge bag, but they did that whole small serving size hat trick, so after doing the math it looks like we ate 72 grams of fat. Oh, dear. No more Poppycock. Hub's favorite small serving size story- an Otis Spunkmeyer muffin. Package contains 1 muffin. Servings per package 3. Shyeah. They've since revised it down to 2, apparently. Gosh, thanks!
Which brings me to New York style ice cream. Alton Brown loves it, and all his recipes are all about it. What distinguishes it from it's brother, Philadelphia style ice cream, is that NY style is a custard, and it's made with eggs (I might have those reversed). The batches he was making had 9 egg yolks in them. Gaah! Hub's recipes are all Philadelphia style, so no eggs, and they taste plenty fine to me.
It wants to rain. I want it to rain. I could almost imagine fall yesterday. I hope it rains.
