So we've had 4 successes with the ice cream maker (vanilla, chocolate, spearmint, brown sugar and cinnamon) and one not-so-successful.

Hub was unhappy with the spearmint because it did not keep it's light green color that it had when he cooked the mix, but turned a pale khaki color. It tasted like spearmint tea, and was about the same color as spearmint tea, so I think it was smashing even if not the (probably artificial) glow-in-the-dark green that mint ice cream from the store is.

I wanted to try some kind of orange flavor. We'd read that you can use jellies to make fruity ice cream, and I thought a nice orange one would be fun for our upcoming Litha shin-dig. So we bought a fairly expensive orange marmalade based on the fact that it had maybe 4 ingredients and they were all recognizable. We also didn't taste it before we made the batch up... it was expensive so it must be good, right?

Er, no. Apparently, good marmalade is made with Seville oranges, which are especially bitter. The whole peel is thrown in, which means a lot of pith is included which makes it even more bitter. Those wacky British! And now we have a batch of bitter orange ice cream. It's not especially Good Eats. I wanted to like it, I really did, and I know I have a childishly simplistic American palate and too much of a sweet tooth, but this just did not work. I was hoping for a Dreamsicle/orange sherbet kind of thing. Well, back to the drawing board. Hub's already plotting his next attempt using orange juice concentrate, Grand Marnier and condensed milk.

Holy SORBET, Batman! That sounds so good! I want an ice-cream maker now!

Try a couple of oddball flavors like carrot and maybe lemon. I remember having both as gelato in Italy, and actual a scoop of each on the same cone complement each other beautifully!

Ick. I've never been a big fan of marmalade, and now I know why. Version 2.0 sounds tasty, though.
