With that friends' icon meme going around, I suspect someone might wonder where I got the "You go squish now!" one from. Well, I saw it on
lovelessregrets' post in
baaaaabyanimals at the same time I was thinking about the fact that I like InuYasha. I asked her if I could swipe it, and she said sure, she'd swiped it from somewhere else. So I can't credit the original artist, though I'd like to.
We were going to play D&D on Saturday in hub's first campaign, but one person had an emergency family visit and another was felled by allergies from hell. So we decided to sit around and fuck with computer stuff which stretched into an all-day thing; I think we were both feeling a bit down and like holing up. Before I knew it, it was 7pm. I suddenly felt like I'd wasted the whole day, and asked hub if he wanted to go for a walk, but it was pouring rain, so we went to the mall instead and got him a badly-needed wardrobe refreshment. I also bought myself a nice pair of amethyst earrings and hub got me a tie-dye shirt with a longhorn on it (I graduated from UT if you didn't know). Hub was reluctant to buy something with that logo on it, but the artist explained how since she or her dad have been dyeing with that pattern for years before UT managed to copyright the image, UT is unable to do anything about it or make them pay for it. It's just an orange cow, as she put it. So there was an element of sticking it to the Man that made hub happy.
Yesterday was testing of an Initiate candidate. When I was tested in my old group it was more or less a recitation of a list of stuff to the HPS, but I've been gathering the whole coven and all of us discussing things, sharing personal experiences with topics that are discussed, 'why I like this' or 'why I hate this' or 'I was surprised to discover this' or whatever. So while there's still an element of regurgitation, it's a lot more about sharing information and experiences, so instead of taking 2-3 hours it ends up taking a lot longer. We broke it up into 2 sessions in the past but that wasn't working with everyone's schedule, so we did this one in a long haul- started at 10am, and talked straight 'til 5pm. In some ways, it's exhausting, because you're really wanting to focus every bit of yourself on what the candidate is saying and analyze it, and at the same time honor it, and at the same time find something relevant to say about it that shares something about you also other than "that's nice; on to the next thing" and making sure the other folks in the group have a chance to say something if they wanna. Whew! She was splendid and will probably initiate at the end of March. We went out for Chinese after to ground and wind down and talked about light silly things.
Our other D&D game that was supposed to be last night had gotten canned due to more cancellations so the DM came over and we just played other stuff. We played an expanded version of Settlers of Catan that stretched the game out to 4 hours ("Settlers and Weavers and Book Binders and Numismatist of Catan, Oh And There's Pirates!"). I lost, but not spectacularly. I seem to have a higher mission in Catan, and that's to be a road builder. It happens in every game; I may not do much else but I always have that longest road bonus, dammit. Even when I don't go out of my way to do it, I end up getting cards encouraging me to build them by making it free- like some kind of middle-school crack dealer. So for whatever reason my over-arching destiny in Catan seems to be building roads. I'm sure that means something.
We balanced that out by a game of Fluxx, which is always a fun game with the right crowd. And the perfect antidote to the complex strategery that is Settlers (and Weavers and Book Binders and Numismatist and Don't Forget The Pirates!).
I also had gotten Round Rock donuts for the testing yesterday, but Gordon ate all the good ones. It's probably just as well.
Today, house cleaning. We're having a get-together for folks who hate Valentine's Day that will involve watching Harold and Kumar and eating hub's version of White Castle. I want the place to look nice. Hopefully it will be a fun time and take people' mind off the apparently soul-crushing misery that is Valentine's Day for some. I personally don't mind it that much- like every other holiday in America, the media is it's worst enemy, but for the most part I believe commercialism shits on everything it comes in contact with, but that's the fault of commercialism and not necessarily the thing that's getting shit on. Hey, I lost my virginity on Valentine's Day (19 years ago in fact- thank you R., it was well-done) so it will always have a special place in my heart.
