I'm feeling a dull ache in my left ear right above my jaw. The scary thing is that this ear feels plugged up, and I've been fighting off this head cold for a week or so. If things go badly, I'll end up with an ear infection over the weekend. That would be very, very bad, as some of the most painful pain I've experienced has been from adult ear infections. But it's a very small pain now, I'm at work, and I'm hoping I can get drugs in me when I get home tonight in time to prevent anything worse from happening. The worst one I ever had started as a twinge at lunchtime, and had me sobbing in pain by 3pm. Thus did my sympathetic doctor introduce me to narcotics at the tender clueless age of 25 or so.

Ugh. Ear infections are the worst. I had one a couple of years ago and it made me want to gouge my inner ear out with a rusty spoon. I didn't get any nifty painkillers, though, just some antibiotic eardrops from the city clinic. Hope it clears up soon!

I hear you on that! I had my first bad ear infection when I was in third grade, and ended up missing quite a bit of school because of it. I'd been sick, but was recovering; I was on the couch, lying down. I don't remember terribly much pain, but there must have been, since my eardrum ruptured and I had to lie on my side to let it drain out. My mom took me to our bathroom, looked down into my ear, said I had a whole in my ear drum, and then hauled me out into a chair in the kitchen because the idea of it made me go woozy and I had to grab the towel bar to keep from faining.
I've had a couple since then, too, one in high school when I was awake and pacing my bedroom from 3 am until 6 because of the pain, and another here in college, where I had my friends drive me to the emergency room so I could get the wonderful wonderful antibiotic Zithromax that I knew, from prior experience, worked amazingly on ear infections.
