If the old saying is true that whatever you did on New Year's Day influences the rest of your year, this year's gonna suck. I've spent the last couple of days in a sick fog; I'm not sure if it's the cold medicine or the cold itself but my brain's been firing on about half it's cylinders and I have not been good for much. However, I was smooching my sweetie and watching a funny show at the moment of New Year's, and ate some black-eyed peas so hopefully I've hedged my bets.
We tried to go to Half-Price Books (Guadalupe location) but for some reason the vibe there just really got to me, and I couldn't wait to get out of there. Then, oddly, when we went to Dragon's Lair comics (their newer, bigger, shinier location on Burnet) that was a lot more relaxing. I don't know what's up with that. Perhaps the feng shui of the HPB was bad; lots of tall crowded aisles that made me feel very claustrophobic. I understand people wanting to flip through books before they buy them, but people had pulled chairs up and blocked several shelves with their opaque selves as they sat there reading. Hey, it's $3, buy it and read it in a coffee shop or something!
Hub's job has weirdly given him today off (rather than Friday) so we're spending our third full day together. This is quite a rarity. We've been spending most of the time taking it easy; reading and watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy; he's on a D&D kick and wants to start a campaign- woo hoo! And I continue to hold to my opinion that Frodo is a big puss. I know I am an unsympathetic jerk for saying so, I own that. But damn, he was constantly kvetching about how awful it was, and falling down and being dragged by Sam, and in the end he didn't even do what he set out to, Gollum/Smeagol did it for him. Then he left with the elves because he just couldn't hack life in the Shire. Shit, Frodo, suck it up! I know, unsympathetic jerk. While I'm busy insulting my friends' workplaces and favorite movies, I also finished 'Kushiel's Dart'. It has a pretty serious case of Mary-Sue-itis, but it was a very well-written and entertaining case of Mary-Sue-itis, and I look forward to the sequel. Hell, one of my other favorite characters (Anita Blake) is the biggest Mary Sue I've ever read but I'm going to keep reading her stories too.

by Kelley Armstrong. I've got several of them in paper back if you want to borrow them. One thing I like is that her characters are so NOT flawless. They fsck up just like everyone else. Having powers or whatever doesn't make them perfect, it just makes it easier for them to make bigger mistakes. :)
