Hub's 29th birthday went well. His mom was there when I got home from work and we went to Manuel's for dinner, place of the high-quality interior Mexican food. I've never really loved the place, but I got a nice rellenos de elotes dish that was sufficiently tasty. Then we were planning to do see a doco about the Moog synthesizer guy at the Village Alamo, but dicked around until it was too late to go. So we found something closer that looked just as interesting- 'What the Bleep Do We Know' at the Arbor. It's a combination of quantum physics primer and New Agey we-are-all-gods lecture. It's easy on the eyes and ears, and one of those movies where you think "Would being high while watching this just be redundant?" The downside is that it does feel a little ham-handed in points (the Chronicle said it was like "finding yourself in an argument with a drunken hippie on a Matrix bender" which is not inaccurate) but I enjoyed it and give it an overall thumbs-up. Also, we had the entire movie theater to ourselves, which was a first for me. I guess not a lot of people want to see a freaky quantum physics movie at 10:30pm on a Tuesday. Bah!
Yesterday I ran some errands and did some shopping since I get paid on the 1st of every month. I got some calendars and a couple of other small trinkets from Whole Life Books, formerly New Age Books, including a couple of nice-smelling votives (because I sure don't have enough of those) and a very pretty book which, upon seeing Amazon's price, I paid way too much for. Oh well, spending money locally and all that. I got hub a belated birthday cake- carrot, from Randall's. They make excellent carrot cake. Then when hub came home we decided we had just enough time to get a little frisbee throwing in. We had bought one Saturday when the weather was so nice and we wanted to do something active but low-key. I had to get used to the idea of buying a frisbee- I haven't had one since I was a kid and most of us just had them, traded them around, threw them on each other's roofs and whatnot. We probably paid too much for one at Planet K, but we didn't have to brave a toy store and again the money was spent locally. So there is a really under-used park nearby and we've been frisbeeing there. I'm not really bad, and it gets me off my ass. We got in about an hour of frisbeeing before the stars started to come out and it was getting hard to see the target and came home for Gordon to pick us up for birthday dinner #2.
Hub wanted some seafood, and the only good non-chain seafood place he'd encountered so far had been Sea Island. Gordon suggested Pappadeaux, which we hadn't tried before. I'm not much of a seafood fan; if it has less than 2 legs or more than 4 I won't eat it (which is also why we don't know a lot of seafood places). But they had a nice array of non-seafood side dishes and between appetizers and veggies I filled up quite well. Then home for the pleasantly usual hot tub and shagging (after cake and Gordon leaving, of course).
I had a very detailed moving dream. For some reason we were having to move into a house in Houston with my parents. The Bushes were involved somehow; it was their fault we had to move. I was depressed about giving up the house here in Austin but at least the new one had a pool (small, but in-ground) and was big enough, though sharing it with my parents (who were about as old as they were when I was a teen) was going to be a bummer.
It's weird. I don't feel 37, and I guess my parents were in their late 40's when we last lived in Houston. Time seems to be moving a lot more quickly since I've gotten older- maybe everything doesn't seem so momentous since things don't change as much between 18 and 37 as they did between 0 and 18. I like having more of an idea of what's coming down the pike, but I'd still like to hold on to that sense of wonder.
Today is slack day; I've been messing with bills and scheduling stuff for the grove and random odd posts to other journals. I plan to get dressed and set up the Christmas tree, then birthday dinner #3 with hub's dad. Then, salads for the next 2 weeks! @@

Date: Dec. 2nd, 2004 12:38 pm (UTC)From:We have a park nearby that has Frisbee golf. It's quite amusing seeing the guys out on weekends, throwing frisbees like it's such a big deal that they hit these poles that have chain catchers... And then, maybe a quarter of the way into the park, some kids are chucking one for their dog ;)
