Another day at the office. I wasn't feeling particularly motivated today, and ended up being late because I ordered How to Be Idle from Abebooks. Isn't that ironic?
As I left for work, I switched the radio to the new station in town that I've become pretty fond of, and that's temporarily stayed my desire to cough up the dough for satellite radio. Unfortunately, there was dead air. I hope the station was experiencing only temporary difficulties; however, I left the radio on the dead air. The silence was actually nice. I heard acorns rolling around on my roof and birds chirping when I was at traffic lights and generally enjoyed the break. It doesn't often occur to me to turn the radio off when I'm driving- I might have to do that more often.
There is some very good news that ends up being somewhat mixed news. I was picked as one of the people to be in the pilot unit that will do background checks. They are planning to run the pilot unit for the rest of October, and my schedule for the rest of the month will be Saturday through Tuesday from 7am to 5:30pm. I love the hours, in fact if I have to work a 10 hour day those are perfect hours. However I don't like working over the weekend, and not having any days off in common with hub. I'll gladly do it for a chance to get out of my current unit, however. This schedule is only for the pilot unit, and when they actually hire people into the unit officially, they start over again with the schedules. The problem is, that the schedules they offered for the permanent positions included that same schedule, another similar one that starts later in the day, and a Monday through Friday from 8am to 4:30pm. The rest started in the afternoon or late at night. For a permanent schedule, the only one I think I would be willing to work is the M-F one.
Another factor is that I am a part-time worker; I work 30 hours a week. I asked the sup of this unit-to-be if he was willing to consider hiring part-timers into his unit. He said it would be very tough; there'd have to be another person who applied who would be willing to work whatever shifts I was not going to work out of a 40-hour week, who met all the other criteria. The odds of that happening are vanishingly slim.
So the question becomes- do I want to give up working part-time to get out of my current unit? Do I want to get out so badly that I'd be willing to work over the weekend too? One or the other, maybe, both, I really don't think so. Then there is the factor of the possibility of working from home- that would change a lot. If I could work at least one of my weekend days from home, then I would be a lot more willing to consider it. I'll have to see if I'm even offered the job in the first place (and if I don't end up hating it!). But the fact that I have been picked for the pilot gives me a pretty good chance, I think. We'll see.
