I kind of got my ass kicked yesterday.

Hub has been getting into board games and found someone online who is an absolute freak about them, so we went over to her house to play around noon. This lady had an entire room devoted to board games with several bookshelves that went up to the ceiling full of them, plus about a wall in every other room except the bathroom covered with more shelves of games. It's been awhile since I was in the presence of a Collector; Cathy's friend the Lobster Lady was the most recent.

So anyway, she and her husband (a chess fiend who occasionally will play other games) played Carcassonne Hunters and Gatherers with hub and I, and then another game whose name eludes me but involved building railroad tracks to cities. I would have enjoyed it much more if I did not come in dead last in all the games we played; I am hoping I am still not firing on all cylinders brain-wise rather than have manifested some awful Simpsons gene or something. And no one was a jerk about it, I just hate losing, which is why I'm not much into board games I guess. But between that, and meeting new people (and they were plenty nice enough) and their kid and the drive and all- I was exhausted. I had planned to run some errands after but I just wanted to go home and go to sleep. Hub was kindly obliging.

That evening was 'The Wicker Man' viewing at Lauren's. We were all supposed to bring a craft to work on, but I figured it would take enough of my brain to concentrate on the movie let alone try to do a counted cross stitch or something. Lauren bought us all wonderfully garlic New Jersey style pizza (not sure what exactly made it NJ style) and had snacks. The movie was fun- I knew there was a human sacrifice in it so I always wondered why so many pagans seemed to like this movie. I can see why; the cop was genuinely dislikeable in a straw man (if you'll pardon the expression) sort of way, so it was easy to cheer for Lord Summerisle. And the islanders seemed to be a happy, hedonistic bunch. Who wouldn't want to be learning about the phallic symbology of the Maypole in elementary school? So yeah, I wouldn't mind living in that community except for the (apparently very occasional) human sacrifice aspect.

I drank a lot of caffeine and was pretty wired mentally though still rather wiped out physically, so was up 'til about 2am reading. Woke up around 9am this morning sure it was Monday for some reason. It suited my mood; I was in kind of a hormonal-feeling funk. But I'm taking it a lot easier today; the most challenging thing I've done other than write this journal entry has been to narrow down some scents to order from Black Phoenix. You can get 1/32 ounce samples for pretty cheap, so I picked a round dozen to sample.

Here's the ones I'm going to try, and the amusing over-the-top descriptions from the website. I looked at the customer reviews to get some more objective opinions, if there is such a thing. It's all cruelty-free stuff, ironically.

BLACK FOREST
This is the captured scent of a cold, moonless night, lost deep within the darkest wood. Haunting and desolate, this scent evokes images of fairy tale tragedy and half-remembered nightmares. Thick, viscous pine with ambergris, black musk, juniper and cypress.

MASQUERADE
A festive, dazzling blend, layered in mystery and intrigue. Patchouli, ambergris, carnation and orange blossom.

OMEN
Deep, mysterious, and full of dark portents: oakmoss, juniper berry, myrrh and patchouli.

XIUHTECUHTLI
Patron of the Aztec pantheon, he is the personification of light within darkness, warmth in the cold, and life in, and after, death. He is a creative and destructive God of Fire and Light, and is appeased only by sacrifice, trial, and the slaughter of his people's enemies. Copal, plumeria and sweet orange and the smoke of South American incense and crushed jungle blooms.

UNDERTOW
The Dark Side of Water: clean and purifying, yet menacing -- lotus and juniper with a hint of mint. A scent dragged up from the depths to the Stygian shore.

GREED
Base and earthy, yet glittering with golden notes: patchouli, heliotrope, copal and oakmoss.

LUST
Uncontrollable passion and insatiable sexual desire: red musk, patchouli, ylang ylang and myrrh.

VIXEN
Lascivious, flirtatious, and vampy as hell. A true heartbreaker’s perfume. The innocence of orange blossom tainted by the beguiling scents of ginger and patchouli.

FENRIS WOLF
The raw, untamable power of chaos. Rosewood, amber, red musk and a dribble of red sandalwood.

TYPHON
A fearsome creature from Greek lore. Typhon was born from the marriage of Earth and Hell, and is said to be so terrible in aspect that even the gods themselves flee from his venomous gaze. Our own blend of Earth and Hell: red patchouli, sandalwood, black musk and vetiver.

OBERON
Orchid, white musk, and bergamot wafting over juniper berries, with a gentle touch of soft, earthy patchouli.

SCORPIO
[not described on the website, but the reviewers said it had a spicy, earthy almost smoky scent.]

Yeah, I know a lot of them have patchouli. I like patchouli, okay? And the idea with the samples is that I find one or two I like and get a bottle of that. They are made of a large percentage of perfume oil (the website claims 85-100%) so I'm probably going to want to figure out some way to cut them with something so it's an actual perfume (15-25%) if I decide I like any of these enough to get a bottle and wear.

Hey. I was thinking of getting some samples as well. Can I just smell yours instead? I like your choices. It seems like you made a good selection.

I love Wicker Man. I love the music. I love the idea of living in an all-pagan community where no one looks at you funny. But especially the music.

Oh man I finally went and looked at that website. The descriptions are something else. I think I'm curious to sniff everything on there.

(I also want to sample that game collection! And I thought Yansa and I had a lot of games!)
