Okay, all you people that exercise regularly, what's the trick? I'm always hearing about how you feel so refreshed and energized and crap after doing your thing, but I just spent 1/2 hour on the bike and all I felt was damp and stinky and tired and crabby. Not something that would want to make me want to keep it up. Maybe I'm expecting too much; but I'd like to get to a point where I don't loathe and dread exercise, and I know other people don't seem to have that problem.

I'm not one of life's born exercisers either, I think the trick is to find something you do enjoy doing - time on a fixed bike or a treadmill or whatever would bore me silly, but I was happy to spend hours practicing archery last year and all the walking and stretching of muscles and aches was just part of the fun; I used ot love swimming cos you don't get sweaty or at least if you do the water takes care of it.
Either find something you like better, or make it a time you don't mind being hot cos you can head for a shower straight after and that's your reward.

I was just like you on exercising. The first thing that ever clicked exercise-wise with me was going to Curves. I think it's because I don't get bored...I'm not doing anything more than 30 seconds at a time. You keep changing what you're doing, so time flies. You don't feel all beat up afterwards either, since you aren't fatiguing just one muscle group.

And the thing that made a difference in staying power is that after 3 times, I felt damn good. And that feeling stayed. Now about 3 to 4 times a week, I'm doing the exercise bike and actually rather enjoying it...where I never did before. It's like a boost of the good endorphins that I get from Curves. I have friends saying the same thing about Workout Express places.

Don't give up, but you might need to try some other exercises to find one that makes you feel like it's worthwhile.

Curves is a workout place for women only. It has approximately 10 hydralic weight machines each focusing on a different muscle group, and a springboard between each station that you can do some sort of aerobics or jogging in between working on the machines. Ideally, you work out for 30 minutes, 3 times a week.

In the beginning, it's hard and icky and not so fun. The trick is to find a routine that works for you and stick to it. Once you get past the initial soreness/exhaustion/blah, you start to feel the energy and endorphins. It helps a lot if you find something you like to do, you vary your exercise a little, and have something else to focus on while you work the body. For some people, having music or reading help a lot. once you get into a good swing with it, it's almost meditative.

As others have pointed out, it takes time for this kind of thing to happen. At first you are strengthening your muscles and gaining stamina and things like that. Second, I think that it takes time to reach the level where you are capable of the kind of workouts that release more of the exercise-related endorphins and other yummy brain chemicals which are a big part of the refreshed feeling. It is hard to feel that, too, when your muscles are in pain. Another thing is that I think it is important to find exercise that is mentally stimulating for you. I love riding my bike out doors (though today was not a good day for it!) but don't think I would enjoy the exercise I got on an exercise bike nearly as much because I would not have the sense of motion and accomplishment I get from a bike ride (I would feel more like a hamster in a wheel). Similarly, I find yoga to be mentally invigorating especially when reinforced by regular group classes. So I think it is important to find exercise that interests you in some way, or is otherwise conducive to a meditative state for you..
