I used to love Mercedes Lackey. I still read her writing, but her preachiness has been really irritating me. I think it was more that I didn't notice it before, or it didn't bother me as much- I did go back and read some of her earlier stuff, and it did have some of the smug scolding I've been getting irked by.
The latest I'm reading is a collection of short stories involving birds in a book she's edited and contributed a story to. Raptors are obviously a big hobby of hers, so this is no surprise. I'm a few pages into it, and really it's coming across as a chance for her to brag about how much she knows about falconry. The princess (who feels more comfortable in an old brown riding habit that a fancy dress- I think she uses that old stereotype in every dang thing she writes) is teaching a young squire about falconry. She's telling him all these facts and he's going 'really? Gee, miss, so why is that? Well, young squire...' and she lectures some more. Please, Misty, if you want to write a paper on falconry do that- every other story in this book so far has had a lot more story and a lot less agenda (birds of prey are neat! But learning falconry is complex! Yet rewarding! And rich snooty people who don't understand the birds they own suck!). Bleh. Maybe it will get better. Laurell Hamilton's stuff is transparently soft-core porn, and obvious wish-fulfillment, but at least she makes it engaging and has some complex plot stuff going on there.

Date: Mar. 18th, 2004 08:45 am (UTC)From:I do like her two latest books, _Alta_ and _The Fairy Godmother_. There are no birds in evidence and the writing is on par with later Valdemar books. I totally understand how sick she must be of Valdemar. The last books, while good got to be too much of an old home week. Maybe she meant it as a grand finale but it felt more like the last episode of Seinfeld.
I think you have my copy of _The Fairy Godmother_ - just let me know if you want _Alta_ as well.
Oh and I agree about L.K.Hamilton. Yes it's porn. But it's lovely fairy magic porn! I can't blame her for fantasizing about a harem of such interesting and lovely men. :)
