Alright, replace 'versus' with 'went to go see', but it makes for a snappy title, right? We went to see the 'Dark Goddess' play at the Vortex for our New Moon event, which happened to be opening night. Nancy and Shannon showed up to car-pool, and we met Brenda, Sherry and her boyfriend there. I was surprised when I went to pay for my ticket- the guy running the ticket booth was none other than Edmund Pantuliano. *gasp* I know, isn't it cool? Okay, for those of you who may not remember he was one of the guys in last year's 'Holy Well and Sacred Flame', and I gushed about him quite a lot when I went to see it. So I said something like "Hey, you're that guy from 'Holy Well'!" and he admitted that he was. I complimented him in the role, even though it was a year later and he thanked me.
We had arrived early to make sure we could all sit together (it's a fairly small theater, and it was opening night) so we had plenty of time to stand around and chat. I spent some time pointing out all the people I recognized to Shannon and Brenda, who have only lived in Austin for a little while. There were lots; Kim formerly of Greg and Kim; the lady who owns a witchy store in town; a lady who took Dedicant classes with my mother grove; et cetera. When we got seated, I followed the rest of my group in so I ended up seated at the end of a row near a wall (which did not give me a very good view of the play, but it was good enough) and Nancy was next to me. She's very talkative and outgoing, so we both started talking about people we knew who were there. I told her gushingly about Edmund, then he came in and sat right next to her, and she relayed everything I said to him. I hope my blushing was not apparent, and he seemed to be pretty good-natured about it.
The play was beautiful and intense, though pretty hard to follow in some spots. There were a few goddesses whose stories I was only vaguely familiar with, and a lot of what went on seemed to assume a pretty close familiarity with their myths. This is why they printed them in the program, and I barely glanced at the thing. So if you go, make sure you read the program! But overall, I give it a thumbs-up, and the people I went with said they enjoyed it too.
