I turned 36 yesterday. Here's to hoping I'm not even halfway done yet.
I woke up and hub was making me some breakfast. He's planning to make a big breakfast for Christmas, since Mom and Brö plan to dine with us, so I offered myself up as a guinea pig. The biscuits were superb, though the gravy was uncooperative and went to feed the compost heap. Maybe next week. I wasn't bummed though, and had to remind hub not to be bummed either- he's way too hard on himself sometimes.
We noodled around for a bit, then I decided I wanted to go see a movie. I checked the listings, looking for something fun and silly, and we went to see 'School of Rock' at the Drafthouse. I heard it was like 'Bad News Bears' but with rock instead of baseball, and that's pretty accurate. If you hate children, or you never got into rock (any time between Hendrix and Metallica) you'd probably not really see the appeal (especially if you want a movie to make you think). But Jack Black is hysterical, the kids were pretty talented, and I really enjoyed the movie a bunch- it was great fun.
Aunt Flo was once again trying to kill me, and I've noticed that if I don't medicate myself at the first hint of pain, it's really hard to kick. By the time we got back from the movie I was hurting a lot, so I think I over-medicated a little. I had an old codeine scrip I'd gotten after some surgery some time back; I was also worried that since the pills were old they wouldn't work as well- I was wrong. I had invited several people over, and as they wandered in I just sort of sat there and smiled and tried not to drool on myself.
Close to 7, we left for the restaurant. It was hub and I, Bob, Brenda, Kirby, and Gordon. I vaguely recall calling a bunch of other people too, but I was pretty doped up so if I didn't call you it was nothing personal, trust me. I didn't plan this one much; just asked people as I saw them. Anyway, we went to Twin Lion and stuffed ourselves. In the adjacent room was a table of about 8 people and they were all chatting too- and since they were louder than us, we heard a lot of the conversation. Star Wars, time travel, D&D... obviously a table of nerds. Since we were a table of nerds too, we got curious about how they knew each other. We speculated and wondered, until finally they left except for 2 or 3 standing at the register. There was one more 'I wonder how they know each other' than I could take so I walked up to them. I think I surprised everyone at our table, but I guess it had become a challenge by then. As it turned out, they were just a bunch of friends, and they get together every Sunday to hang out and eat and talk geek. Some of us might try to crash them next week, who knows.
Then home for cake. Hub made me a wonderful black forest cake, flavored with a little bit of amaretto (it would've been more, but the booze shops are closed on Sundays *shakes fist*). I drooled on myself some more and we watched a very amusing pilot for a TV show hub had downloaded- 'Heat Vision and Jack', episode 14 (yes, this was the pilot). It stars Jack Black as an astronaut who was exposed to radiation and becomes the smartest man in the world (but only during daylight) and his motorcycle Heat Vision which is possessed by the spirit of his roommate (Doug). Evil NASA guy Ron Silver (played by Ron Silver) is the bad guy. Very, very funny- it was produced by Ben Stiller, who made a point of telling us all about the amazing special effects as he gleefully ripped up a picture of George Lucas. The special effects were really awful.
Then it was time for some Adult Swim, but I was falling asleep so we kicked everyone who was left out and crawled up to bed- I think I was out in under 3 minutes. I awoke again around 3 to more pain, took more pills and fell asleep to the sound of rain. I feel quite a bit more human today, and wish I wasn't at work as usual.
I got some cool things for my birthday- hub got me a new purse since my old one was completely falling apart- a Kipling, if that tells you anything. He also got me the Lion King, one of my favorite movies which is how I know he loves me because he loathes Disney. Kirby got me a chunk of celestite, which is timely since I've realized that seeing the sky is one of my favorite things to do in life... and also a set of carved amethyst pythagorean solids, better known as 'D&D dice shaped.' Woo!
