I was reading stuff from Tom Tomorrow's site, and he made a reference to something written by conservative columnist Ann Coulter on 9/14:
We know who the homicidal maniacs are. They are the ones cheering and dancing right now. We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. We weren't punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That's war. And this is war.
It's crap like this that gets me scared.
Fear is warring with disgust as I read countless examples of people using this tragedy to peddle their own cause. I mean, I expect no better from advertisers, they're scum anyway. It was Foley's, I believe, that took out a full-page ad in the daily paper explaining how sympathetic and saddened they were about the attacks, then how every alternating page in the whole front section after that message had a full or half page ad for Foley's for perfume, underwear, ties, you name it. IOW, they didn't have any intention of yanking all their ads but they felt the need to throw up a cheap sympathy grab in front of them so you would initially think "ooh, look! They're so nice!" and then get hit with all the ads- so you can support them, and of course America, by Buying More Stuff. That's what's really important, after all.
But what is sadly surprising is how the letters to the editor are filled with screeds from everyone using the tragedy to peddle their favorite cause. The form seems to go as such: If we have learned nothing from the events of 9/11, I hope we now realize that we need to (buy insurance, come to Jesus, ditch all religions, stop eating meat, rotate our tires regularly, etc). I may agree that some of these things should be done, but to use 9/11 as a way to bring attention to that cause really cheapens it in my eyes. Just quit it, y'all.
