No one asked for specifics about why I hate Wal*Mart, but I've been thinking about it anyway.

Then this was in today's paper.

I see W*M as the big bully that plays on the fears and insecurities of the average Joe to get what it wants. Kind of like the Republican party, if I may be so leftist (and another article in the paper quoted an aid to our Republican governor as dismissively calling MoveOn.org 'hard left and anti-Bush' as if those are the most heinous things one can be).

The most telling quote:

"[Wal-Mart spokeswoman Daphne Davis] Moore stressed that Wal-Mart has never backed off a site solely because of neighborhood opposition."

Nice.

For me to peruse later... some random guy also hates W*M. I seem to remember there used to be a walmartsucks.com website, but I heard W*M sued the guy and had it removed. :P

Illogic

The sales tax argument is silly. The income they're describing is accurate only if all the income is spent by people who wouldn't spend money locally anyway. If your WalMart is catering exclusively to Japanese who've traveled to shop at that WalMart, the argument holds. Somehow, I suspect that isn't what happens.

Good point, I hadn't thought of that. I also wonder if being employed there is any better than being on the dole, considering how they treat their employees.

After reading an article in Mother Jones about how Wal-Mart treats its employees, I decided to stop buying there. It's hard, because they're just so damn convenient. Thank you for giving me another reason to add to my list.

I shop there maybe one a year. I'm trying to cut back on that.
