Further proof that Americans are crazy, and not in the good way: Vacation Starvation.

I really meant it when I said I switched back to S1, but I somehow keep ending up with S2. Buggy, indeed. I feel like I've tried my free AOL and want out, but ain't being let out. I also keep having to sign back in and tell them 'no I really mean it, I want to be signed in all the time.' Not sure what's up with that.

As to jury duty, we were there for an open container violation case. The lawyers on both sides asked some questions (and were told by the judge that some of them were inappropriate) and we all went out to mill about in the hallway while they decided which of the 15 or so of us that had shown up were going to be jurors. Then we were called back in, and the judge said that the state had dismissed the case, for whatever reason. So we were free to go by about 10:30 or so. I walked to the bus stop I'd waited at yesterday, which I had chosen because it was in the shade. Well, since it was later in the day there wasn't shade anymore, so I decided to go to another bus stop further down the route. I was picked up and on my way by about 11:30. Then I got to second leg of the trip, and waited for the bus there. And waited, and waited. Hub called at around 1pm, and was wondering where I was. I asked him to come get me, since he was home from work (his contract is working him part-time these days). I must once again re-state my gratitude for not having to rely on the bus system to get anywhere.

Yesterday was weird, marked by unexplainable irritation and ennui. Today I'm going to try to be productive, at least cleaning some and getting ready for class Friday. Also, Autumnfest in Atlanta is less than a month away now. I'm not scheduled to do anything there except participate in stuff (which will be a nice change), and I will be driving up with one of the new Dedicants. Per above article, I also asked off for some time in October to go to Hot Springs. I'm not going to be a typical American, dammit. I think part of the culture in this country that really irritates me is the work ethic, which started out benignly enough but has been twisted by the Powers That Be into a bludgeon of guilt to wring more of our precious time out of us, which isn't even productive. It makes no sense!

i don't really have a choice but to take 2 weeks in the summer and a week in the winter- at least- because my employers take them and go out of town.
but i can tell, my male boss gets reamed for taking vacations. corporations suck. they pile more work on him pre and post vacation, that other people could do- fucking people.
you are loved!

Ditto. I remember so often as a child my dad would take two or three weeks off at Christmas to use up his vacation time. He tried taking vacation off in the summer (4 week trip, 1 week to Seattle, 2 weeks in Washington, 1 week driving back to NY), but he was told that he could only take two weeks at a time, no more. Half the time when he tries to take vacation, he's "not allowed."

I think the Italians, Spanish, and Mexicans have the right idea about working - lots of vacation and a 2 or 3 hour lunch. Americans have been forced into workaholism thanks to the corporate pigs who want their stock up half a point.

we have become a global economy, where the individual is a number :( I hate that...
