austin_tycho: crater (Shades of green)
Well, camping was kind of a bust.

We got on the road around 5:30pm yesterday, and it took awhile to arrive because of course traffic was terrible. We stopped at Sonic and grabbed some dinner, and they screwed up our order (which we didn't notice 'til we arrived at the campsite 20 minutes or so later). We set up, enjoyed ourselves until we decided to go to sleep... and couldn't. At least I couldn't. It felt really, really, really unpleasantly hot, even though it was probably not too bad (upper eighties to mid seventies). Part of it was the lack of breeze, which when we tried to fix by rolling down the windows was replaced by boggy humidity seeping in compounded by severe blood loss to mosquitoes. In addition, though we had eyeballed the car as level, it wasn't- and you can sure tell when you try to sleep, especially if you're head's lower than your feet. Crap. I finally decided to fix it (the levelness issue) around 3am after not getting any sleep, and finally drifted off to very light sleep around , oh, 5am. Then woke up at 7am. I managed to catch about another 30 minutes in naps, but It was looking like it was going to heat up again (turns out we broke another record and hit 98 today) and hub was feeling worse than I was, so we decided we weren't having sufficient fun to justify staying, packed up and left.

I was going to try to stick it out, but hub said he wanted to leave. In retrospect, I'm glad I let his wussiness win out over my stubbornness. Yes, it's cooler than last week; yes, cavemen and other people used to not having air conditioning laugh at weather conditions such as this. But dammit, I don't sleep well out in warm, humid weather (especially with a warm, humid person smooshed up next to me in a relatively small space) and if this is going to be considered any sort of a vacation I need to be able to get at least a few hours of good sleep. Life's too short to waste on trying to be macho.

But we did see an abundance of wildlife. White-tail deer were everywhere- I even saw one taking a big ol' dump. I don't know why that was so amazing, I assume they do it all the time. But I'm used to seeing quickly retreating deer asses, not deer just calmly squatting and pooping before my very eyes. I also saw a buncha lizards and birds, and we even saw 2 living armadillos (the vast majority of armadillos I've seen as road kill). One was crashing through the brush at night, the other was crashing through the brush this morning- and went to the edge of the river and flopped down and rolled in the mud to cool off. It was quite comical seeing this- something hub called 'am Animal Planet moment' or something to that effect. He also noted that it's a good thing they're armored since they make so much freaking noise.

So I am home, covered with bites and sleep-deprived and trying to look on the positive side of things. We're going to try to just have a quiet evening at home, and maybe do something fun tomorrow.
