Okay, this is really sucking. Whatever is going on with the ribs has moved from 'interesting' to 'really goddamn unpleasant'. When I'm sitting up or standing, it's a fairly constant low-level pain that's not fun, but deal-with-able. However, when I lie down and have the audacity to exhale, it feels like someone's sticking a fucking knife in my side and back right at the bottom of my breath. And you may not usually think about it, but exhaling is fairly integral to the breathing process. There's even a song about it.
This was the worst when I was lying on my back, which is how I sleep 85% of the time. The other 15% is when I'm on my side, but it's only slightly less painful that way. Oddly, if I lay on my stomach, the pain goes away almost entirely.
Once I was able to get relaxed enough (and after the Vicodin kicked in), I slept okay because I think I was breathing shallowly enough not to hit that magic spot. But getting there was a bitch. I dunno about you, but when I'm trying to relax my instinct is to take slow, deep breaths and that obviously wasn't working. I am sufficiently clueless about anatomy to figure out what the heck's going on; I would've thought that if I'd managed to do something to my ribs, I would've felt it most when I inhale and stretch stuff out, but no. If I'm vertical breathing doesn't seem to affect it, though laughing does, as does lifting stuff.
Blarg. I think I'm whined out.
