The financial situation is looking really bad. We've chopped some phone services, and have been eyeing the cable bill too. I'm going to start picking up more hours at work, I guess. Hub's applying for any state job that he's remotely qualified for. We started to get into a major funk about it yesterday, so I insisted that we go to Hamilton Pool, at least to get out of the house.

We arrived close to 3pm, so there wasn't a ton of time to spend (the park closes at 5:30pm), but I really enjoyed it anyway. The water had a film of stuff over it, which I hope was schmutz from falling leaves but fear may have been sunscreen from people swimming in it all summer. It wasn't there the last time I visited earlier in the year, but despite it there were still all sorts of wildlife living there. I made a point of swimming around the entire pool; there were plenty of these fish that we called bluegills when I was a kid; they were all over the place. I spotted a turtle of some kind sunning on the edge of the pool. His shell looked just like an algae-covered rock- it was probably sheer luck that I noticed him at all. I also saw several catfish- one was almost 2 feet long. There was also some sort of koi-looking fellow who was white with black dalmation spots. I saw this knotty, arcane-looking fish who was a pale pinkish-white who stared at me as much as I stared at him. I also spotted a snapping turtle, and watched him for a good long time. He was pretty big, and wasn't aggressive at all, but I could tell he was eyeing me. I must have gone back up for air at least 20 times as I was watching him, and he never did surface- it's amazing how long they can stay under water.

Hub has lost a bit of weight over the summer and the water seemed especially cold to him, so he stayed out. I chatted with him for a bit, but got back in and just drifted for awhile while he sat on the shore and enjoyed all the nature. There are rocks towards the back of the cave-part of the pool that are covered with moss and maidenhair ferns, and are watered by some seeping underground spring above them. Since the cave faces more or less to the west, the afternoon Sun was lighting up the back of it, and I watched as millions of tiny drops fell on the moss and ferns like diamonds. It was quite awe-inspiring! Then I swam back to shore and sat still, watching the bluegills come up and (I think) try to determine if I was edible or not. If I sat still enough, I would get quite a crowd of them, as many as 5-6, just... waiting. One would drift closer, less than an inch away from my leg at times, then back off slowly. They had hardly any fear. Something nibbled on my ass as I was sitting, probably the little orange-striped minnow looking fellows that I saw in the shallowest part of the waters. Finally all the people started clearing off around 5:15 or so and we decided to take off.

We spent a fairly quiet (but sex-filled) evening at home. Bob hasn't been around hardly at all; he and Bean turned some corner in their relationship where he's not irritated at her all the time like he seemed to be there for awhile, so he is spending all his time over at her place. We miss him a bit, I think, but it's been nice spending evenings alone together too.
