1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (11/22/1963)
Not even fetal at that point- I was born in 1967.
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
In 6th grade, I imagine... I don't remember much about it directly, but I do remember before and after shots (creepy! And I just saw another one in one of
3. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
Playing hooky from school- it was my senior year of high school and I lived in Kerrville. I told Mom I was sick, and was just lounging around. She called me from work and told me to turn on the TV. I somehow felt more guilty for skipping that day.
4. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)
I was in college, and pretty oblivious to current events. I remember seeing the squashed highway and feeling pretty wincey.
5. When the Berlin Wall fell (11/7/1989)
The fact that Bush took credit for it struck me as cheeky even then. But it was fun watching the celebrations.
6. When the Gulf War began (1/16/1991)
I lived in Killeen, and was horrified. I remember when 'Desert Shield' started, and gas prices went up 10 cents in a matter of a few hours. Then when the war actually started, I was trying to call someone and kept getting 'all lines are busy' message- after a few tries, I turned on the TV and saw bombing. I felt really terrible- I worried about my friends getting drafted since it was the first war in my lifetime.
7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
I thought 'oh great, another celebrity being a dick' and didn't give it much thought at the time.
8. When the building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
Buried in work, and not paying attention much. Briefly alarmed when I noticed that McVeigh looked exactly like a roommate I had had problems with a year or two back.
9. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
Visiting my dad in Sweetwater. I remember being briefly sad, then wondering if the media was going to be totally absurd about it, which of course they were.
10. When Bush was first announced President (11/7/2000)
I was at home, feeling very disappointed and disillusioned. How could anyone vote for this fool? It was then that I first began to seriously think that Americans are a bunch of morons.
11. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
Huh? I somehow missed that one... *blush*
12. When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
I'd called in sick that day (another case of playing hooky when disaster strikes). A friend IMed me and said a plane had crashed, and I asked him 'by accident?' not really thinking it could have been on purpose. Realizing it wasn't, horrified again, friend came over, got on the phone with Elder and got a peace working scheduled for that evening. Talked to parents and made sure everyone was OK. Hub and friend went out that night an bought 'The Siege' on dvd. Then got really frustrated when this screwed up my plans to travel to Atlanta on 9/13, but that was much later.
