We went to see the second Harry Potter movie at Alamo last night. Because something always goes wrong at Alamo, they said 'the bar was closing' but we paid no mind, thinking we'd get dessert later. But they meant all concessions were closing, so no dessert. Ah, well. It was a cool movie, fun and with only one Quiddich game- I always thought those seemed pasted in, like 'oh, we need to have an action thing in here like the pod races in Star Wars' even though it's in the book. It followed the book quite nicely, and left out stuff that didn't go missing. The actors are growing up too; I think the guy that plays Harry's voice dropped a bit since the first move. He'd going to be a cute guy when he starts getting pubes. I worry that he (and the others) are growing faster than they can make the movies, since the books each represent one year of time.
Today I finished the third book, which was OK. The ending was great, but I was hoping they'd flesh out some of the characters. Snape and Malfoy have, if anything, gotten more two-dimensional. The thing I liked about Star Wars was how Vader turned up a lot more complex that just a cardboard bad guy. And damn, that school needs a fucking counselor! These kids all go through all this traumatic stuff (Harry getting so scared of something that happened at one point he fainted and fell 50 feet off his broom) and everyone's kind of like 'oh, man, that must have sucked' but no adults ever really check in with the kids and say 'hey, are you all right? Want to talk about it?' Perhaps it's a British thing. I'll still read book 4 if I happen to get it for Yule (if not I'll pick it up used somewhere) and probably enjoy it.
I spent most of the day resting. We both have been fighting off a cold and I wanted to sleep a lot; I couldn't because I was all phlegmy but I took it easy. This was good weather for it though, I don't think it got out of the forties all day. It was neat, because we went into the movie and it felt like it was in the seventies, and when we got out the temperature had dropped at least twenty degrees. Let it snow, baby!
Hubby made awesome vegetarian Frito-like pie for dinner. Now he is trying to figure out how to prove to the bank that he didn't make only $5000 last year so we can refinance our mortgage. What I wonder is, if it's the bank he has his checking account with, why can't they just look at his deposit history? Oh- they said I had one of the most wonderful credit ratings they had seen; she said she'd only seen a few better in the last few years. Go me!
