Thanksgiving dinner went off without any problems- color me impressed. Hubby made grilled turkey, sweet potatoes with marshmallows (and used fresh potatoes, and made his own syrup with was amazing), homemade gravy, a cranberry dipping sauce we saw on 'Good Eats', pumpkin pies, cherry cobbler, and his awesome stuffing cakes. Mom made her famous cheesy mashed potatoes, and I made chocolate chip cookies. Bro brought boyfriend Tom and best friend Jason over, and contributed some Red Fusion for me (which he insists on refering to as Red Rocket, in a disturbing South Park homage) and a beautiful centerpiece with little mums and autumn leaves. Most of us sat outside on the porch- everyone but hub and I are practically chain smokers, unfortunately. Fortunately the weather was very nice- it was cool, but sunny and not biting cold like Jim (Spencer, my man on the local NBC affiliate's weather) had predicted. Dinner came together right around 6:30 and we all stuffed ourselves while watching the end of the Cowboy game and 'Half Baked' on dvd. It was grand.

Bro, Tom and Jason left around 8. Mom started rooting in her purse shortly thereafter for her diabetic medicine. She takes a pill in the morning and at night. Well, she didn't have them- she left them at home. She's never had to skip a done before, but after fretting for a minute tried to blow it off saying 'Oh, I'll be fine.'

Now, I don't know much about diabetes, but I dated a guy once and watched him have one of those 'oops I forgot my insulin' episodes where he became sweaty, uncoordinated and couldn't talk. Seeing as how Mom had eaten a pretty atypical meal with a lot of sugar, I was not wanting to chance that this would happen to her and we have no accessible insulin lying around. So I started searching the net- I found her doctor and clinic, but they were closed. I called the local 24-hour pharmacy, but they wouldn't do anything without a prescription. I called the on-call nurse at her clinic, and she took a bunch of information down. She called an on-call doctor, who called the 24-hour pharmacy with a prescription. It was a piece of cake- the only problem being that Mom couldn't remember the dose of the pill she took. She could describe it as lozenge-shaped and yellow, so upon further research we discovered that the 1.25 mg is yellow, the 2.5 is pink, and the 5 mg is a slightly different shade of yellow. We clicked back and forth between the pictures, but she was not sure. When we got to the pharmacy, they'd given her the 2.5, and she argued that she knew it wasn't that one, at least. So the pharmacist got the other two, and we found that although you couldn't tell from the pictures, the 5 mg was a lot bigger in person than the 1.25 mg, and she was able to tell by size that she took the 5. So the pharmacist called the doctor back, got the prescription changed, and Mom paid $9 for 2 pills. Sheesh! I was relieved that we were able to get it covered though.

Oh! And she brought me a couple of birthday presents- gift certificates to Lowe's and a couple of Christmas tree ornaments. I suppose I need to decide where I'm going to put the tree this year since the formerly unused space the tree had previously occupied has been converted into a mellow nook. Mom liked all the home improvements we've done, too.

Seeing her is always sort of a mixed bag. She is getting a bit forgetful, is really pretty deaf, and has a horrible hacking cough all the time, which she insists is from bronchitis and claims smoking actually quiets it. If I mention it, she shuts me down by saying 'don't nag.' Ugh, it really bothers me to see it and hear her hacking continuously like that.

She left by 8am this morning, hoping to get home in time to get some cleaning done and maybe a little shopping. Because I cleaned like mad yesterday and everyone spent most of the evening outside, the house is still pretty clean, and I already mentioned why I'm not planning to shop today. Sooo I've been lounging around and reading some Harry Potter and napping. I don't know why I'm so sleepy; I'm not feeling depressed or sleep-deprived. Snuggling in bed just feels really good, and based on a sore throat and a lot of goo in my head, I wonder if my body's trying to fight off a cold (or maybe nicotine overload).

Later today we go to the bank to look over the papers for the refinancing. So technically I may be buying a house on Buy Nothing Day, which is kind of a bummer but since the process started Wednesday I hope that can be forgiven. Another thing I hope is, that since we're getting another mortgage that maybe we won't have to make our first payment until January. That would be sweet!
