More advice from the mechanic, just so I'll have it all in one place:
A 1994 Explorer, huh? Well, it's OK as long as you don't have to pay for it. Whether it'd be worth keeping versus trading in on something else will depend on how many miles are on it.
Subarus are surprisingly fragile, and have head gasket problems in the long run. So do pretty much all Japanese 6-cyl; 4-cyl engines are the best thing in the world but they just haven't gotten the hang of 6 cyls yet. If I want a camping vehicle that's not huge check into the Camry wagon, or the 4-Runner if it comes in a 4-cyl.
Volvos are horrible- the parts are hard to get and they're very expensive. VWs- same deal; the engines can last forever on a VW but everything else falls apart.
