Ugh; I feel like I've had the crap beaten out of me and I have a ritual to run tonight.

I slept on my neck wrong and it's been getting more painful as the day has progressed. In addition, I lugged groceries, bags of gravel, buckets of water and a futon yesterday and today which may be part of the problem (ya think?). [livejournal.com profile] scorpionis popped by to trade back telescopes, because the big one was too unwieldy for her (I can't really blame her)- but gave me her little one to make up for it. Nice! She also sold me an aquarium heater, which was the last thing I was waiting for to set up.

After a bunch of cursing and false starts and more cursing, I finally got the thing rolling with much help from hub. The gravel is mostly black with some malachite-looking dark green in it for variety. I planted a big clod of java fern from the 10-gal, and plopped a pretty glass paperweight in it. Now all it needs is some fish.

I was at Hypercompuglobalmegapet and spied many neat-looking fishies, but there were more than a few floaters and they say that's something you definitely want to avoid, so I will need to go elsewhere. My favorite shop, Gallery of Pets, seems to be running low on cool fish and high on goldfish (boring) so I may have to run to Aquatek or Amazonia or Rivers and Reefs down south. I had been saving a gooped-up filter in the 10-gallon to just float in the 55 so it should start growing the happy bacteria soon.

The temperature seems high, plus it's really cloudy so I'll probably wait a few days. I don't know why it's so hot, I filled it with (treated) water right out of the tap at the coldest setting.

Tonight, as much as I'm looking forward to it, is going to kick my ass. I had requested tomorrow off thinking I was going to be camping, but since we didn't end up going, I had planned to save my leave and go in anyway. I may go ahead and stay home, though, depending on how I feel.

Another factor is financial. For reasons I don't want to go into a lot of detail about, we're so very broke, and the immediate future looks rather bleak. The short version is that hub's client is fucking him by exploiting a loophole in the contract. Neither of us knows how to read contracts very well, so we walked into it, kinda. It puts a serious ding in one's faith in the inherent goodness of humanity. >:[ So I may need to pick up extra shifts after all.

Ooooooo, I HATE HATE HATE the way the clients will do that to the computer contractors. It's like they're being punished for being smarter and more capable of doing something that the clients only WISH they could do, and the clients always lie through their teeth whenever they can get away with it. Assholes. Hope it works out.

Re: the tank's temperature. Does it get any sunlight?? That will spike the temp and it takes a lot longer for a bigger tank to cool down than a smaller one. And just how warm is it? Lights can also keep a tank warmer than it should be. Just some ideas.

The little glue-on mood-thermometer said 86, but there is no way it was that warm. I stuck my arm in it and it was plenty cool, so I think the therm. was just plain wrong. FWIW, it's downstairs in a room that gets no sun (window is facing a covered porch).

Yeah, I know what you mean about the contractors- the issue seems to be that she paid him for a job worth an estimated number of hours, but since he was efficient enough to get the job done in less hours, she's claiming he still owes her hours. Of course, she brings this up after he's been working for a month on extra bells and whistles that she'd previously agreed to pay him for.

Yeah, those stick-on thermometers aren't very good. I like the ones that sink to the bottom that can be buried in the gravel. The ones with suction cups invariably come loose and float to an inconvenient place in the tank.

Re: the client. Perhaps some bluffing is in order: sometimes just mentioning the word 'lawyer' is enough to make idiots shut up and do the right thing (i.e. "I think I'll have my lawyer look this over and I'll get back to you.). Worked for me many moons ago when an apartment complex tried to screw me over. They turned belly-up in a hurry!
