Anyone planning on attending the Prop 8 protest gathering tomorrow downtown? (details) As I was explaining to a friend, this has grown from bitching about some other state's dumb voting decisions to a broader desire to voice support for gay marriage specifically and gay rights in general. That's how I see it anyway, and I'd like to show up. I'd like to either catch a ride with someone, or else offer up the van to take more than just myself. Who's in?

Hmmmm..

While I'm very much in favor of gay marriage, I think Texans protesting California's passage of prop 8 is bit Pot/Kettle and ultimately pointless.

I mean, what action is this supposed to provoke? Our legislature has no jurisdiction and our citizens have, rightfully, no say in CA politics.

That was me BTW.....

O hai!

Wellll, as I mentioned in my post whoever you are, I think this has gone from being about meddling in another state's politics (which it seemed initially, and why I wasn't planning to go at first) to being a lot more about showing support for gay marriage and gay rights. So I don't expect that this will make California change anything but rather raise awareness and show folks that not everyone in Texas is a buncha queer-hatin' redneck jerks. That's my motivation, anyway.

Meh. Having worked the Prop 2 in Austin 2-3 years ago, *pretty much* everyone in Texas is a buncha queer-hatin' redneck jerks.

Sure, that's why I want to be one of the noisy minority. I like to show up at a good protest every now and again.

Agreed - it's a national awareness thing now. Besides that a number of those who supported it monetarily are not Californians.

Here's the problem with that. The protest is titled "8 is Enough"

The whole reason the protest is for people to protest what voters legally voted for in another state for that state's constitution.

It's not a love-in, not a demonstration, it's a *PROTEST*.

And as much as I am in support of Gay Rights and want there to be Gay Marriage, I think calling for the repeal of the results of the California's Voters will is a VERY BAD IDEA. The ends do NOT justify the means.

Let the parties concerned work through the legal system, AS THEY HAVE BEEN.

The reason I am going is because I'm generally against unequal treatment of gay people. This thing was initiated by people being unhappy at things that happened in another state, but in my mind it's grown bigger than that. So that's why I'm going. You don't have to go if you don't want to.

I'm definitely going. I am planning on staying about an hour before heading back up north, as I have other stuff going on that day. Be happy to split a ride.

Cool! I also have stuff going on and want to be back no later than about five. You want to drive or shall I? I'll happily come to where you are if you want to drive (though I'll need a reminder of your address).

Either way is good, but I need to be back north a whole lot earlier than 5. I was only planning on staying until either 1:30 or 2 (depending on if place-to-be #2 was canceled or not).

Hmm; let's go separately then since I'd like to be able to stay later if festivities continue past 2. I will see you there though!

I'm definitely going.

Sure, though I don't know if carpooling is a good idea - I've got session later that day so I might need to split earlier than desired.
