So, in the last few days I've gotten some new stuff to listen to.
Ani DiFranco... not really doing a lot for me. I don't know what my problem with a lot of female vocalists is, but they sound... oh, over-wrought to me. Like they're thinking too hard before they set pen to paper, and it comes out emotionally strained. This falls in that category for me. And yeah, I bet it will come across as shallow, but it's just how my ear hears it. I'll keep listening though. I'm told she can be an acquired taste.
Bad Religion... alright, I liked 'Sorrow' so I got the album, and again we run into a matter of taste- punk doesn't do much for me either. It ends up all sounding the same to me. 'Sorrow' had a slower beat and sounds more like plain old rock than punk, so I think that's why it grabbed my attention. The rest of it's a bunch of frantic thrashing. Meh. I know they're known for having terrific lyrics, but if the sound doesn't appeal to me, great lyrics won't make up for it. Will give them a couple of more chances too.
Bob Mould... I have a few different things by him- some solo stuff, Blowoff, Hüskër Düüüüü. I'm liking this. I understand that some of what I'm listening to is a departure from what A Typical Bob Mould Fan would consider listen-worthy, but I'm digging it. It's very dense, a lot more keyboard-heavy than most the other stuff I've been listening to, and still kind of dreamy and ethereal. I think this will go into the regular rotation.
