Apr. 30th, 2010 02:14 pmOkay, so I had this dream where I'm playing a very minor role in a big musical production; I'm one of the many little cogs in a great big Busby Berkeley dance number. But wait! The leader of the troupe choses me to sing with 3 others in a Beatles cover band project (I'm planning to see the Eggmen soon, so it's no surprise where this came from in my dream). I'm ecstatic, and I feel very confident about this, like it's a dream fulfilled (in a dream. Confused yet?). The director starts us right into a Beatles song I've never heard before but I am able to jump right in and pick up the harmonies effortlessly. It felt very natural and real and awesome.
And here is where I dearly wish that there was a recording device for dreams... how does your brain serve up "a song you've never heard before"? Does it pick one you've heard but don't consciously remember? Does it compose a new song on the spot? I'd give a lot to play that back and listen to that song. I have this sneaking suspicion that my brain harbors the capacity to actually compose music, and I just haven't figured out how to get to it. I mean, I love music and I know enough about it, but I don't have the first idea of how to go about actually creating music. So this sort of thing makes me really curious.
The question remains- which do I want to do more, compose music or be in a Beatles cover band? I think the latter. But both would be fabulous, for the record.
