Holy fuck! The co-op where I used to live was prominently featured in the New York Times!

When I was there, it was the Ark. I moved there in 1986 when I started going to the University of Texas and left in the spring of 1988 because I wanted to live in an apartment. Note, the summer after I moved out it was closed down for renovation (and the fuckers painted over my mural). The article said "By the 80’s drug habits were so pervasive in the Ark that it was shut down in 1988 because of “anarchy and building destruction,” as the brochure for College Houses puts it." Or as Brö puts it "they had to close it because it had become such a wretched hive of scum and villainy or something."

This was my introduction to Austin, a place I had never been to, after going to high school in Kerrville (graduating class- 220 or so). My, oh, my. Or as Brö puts it- "Wow. No wonder you turned out such a godless lesbian and everything." I guess what the rest of Texas says about Austin is true. Thank the gods.

Here's the article: Read more... )
