Jan. 24th, 2004 11:37 amBolt just got his flavor injection; he fought it quite a lot this time too. *sigh* Not the injecting itself, which he continues to be a trooper about- but when he picks up on the fact that it's That Time, he holes up somewhere and has to get dragged out kicking and growling. I keep hoping it will get easier; I guess I should be happy that it's not otherwise getting harder.
Yesterday I went over to Brö's and we celebrated his birthday. He's 14 months younger than I, so he just turned 35. When we were much younger and poorer, we never had big bars of nice soap like you kids these days (and liquid soap was not a reality). Dad always swiped hotel soap, or else we got the cheapest crap we could buy. Irish Spring was what all the rich kids had, so at some point I spent some of my allowance on a bar of Irish Spring. I think I still have it in a box somewhere- I didn't ever use it, I just smelled it. Anyway, my brother was jealous and wanted some; I think one of the parents insisted I give him some of it. A lot of our childhood was like that... I was a little better at saving and planning, so I'd buy something I'd wanted. Brö (who was more of a 'live in the now' kinda guy) would get jealous, and the parents would insist I share. It struck me as horribly, horribly unfair at the time. He paid me a quarter, so I was supposed to carve off a chunk for him. Instead, I whittled off a quarter's worth of it, and presented him with a pile of shavings.
I remember him being bitterly disappointed, and me being pretty proud of myself for being so diabolic. We seemed to be fighting all throughout our childhood; we were close enough in age that our parents were always trying to equalize things between us, which I resented as communist and sexist. At the same time, I was an over-achieving kiss-ass at school, and I think Brö (who was every bit as intelligent and creative as I was) resented the roles my Dad especially tried to cast us in. I was the smart, academic, and artistic one, and he was the Son and Heir- and Dad always assumed that would be played out in the athletic arena (Dad found his niche growing up by becoming Big Man on Campus- the football star). Brö was never appreciated for his academic achievements and was always pushed into sports, which he hated. So we were both crabby and resentful of the other one.
Boy, what idiots kids are. :P
Anyway, so Brö turned 35 yesterday. I gave him a couple of books off his wish list, some scratch-off tickets, a couple of coupons for free Ben and Jerry's, and whole complete bars of Irish Spring. Let the healing begin. Heh.
Anyway, how about something less nostalgic? The Friday Five.
At this moment, what is your favorite...
1. ...song?
I guess I will go with 'Up and Away' from Dave Matthews' solo album. So 70's sounding!
2. ...food?
I'm looking forward to eating an artichoke tonight.
3. ...tv show?
Good Eats, or Futurama, depending. I'm really enjoying the 'Buffy' dvds we've been watching too, though.
4. ...scent?
Hmm... copal incense is always nice- I also dig the orange-cranberry potpourri oil we've got too.
5. ...quote?
Quote. Huh. I don't do quotes a lot... I looked on my page of general wisdom and ran across this: "Someday after we have mastered the winds, the waves, the tides, and gravity, we shall harness the energies of love. Then, for the second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire. - Teilhard de Chardin" then I looked at my page of stoner wisdom and found this: "Shit! I could’ve bought a fucking can of spaghetti!" I'm sure it really made sense at the time.
