Aug. 25th, 2003 12:00 pmSo, we went to Ikea (or is it IKEA?) because we'd never been and heard about it in 'Fight Club' among other places. I guess the impression I get is that as far as stuff, they're like Wal*Mart +2, +3 vs. lycanthropes. But, they don't seem to have W*M's evil business practices, which is my main beef with W*M.
Ikea is a consumer orgy. The stuff is kinda nice, though, and I did like a lot of it and if I was having to furnish a house from scratch I'd probably spend a lot of money there. I like the look of the stuff; it reminds me of the Copenhagen furniture store here in town which has similar-looking furniture which is much better built and therefore a lot more expensive. But it's a lot of wood, light-colored wood which a lot of furniture around here isn't. I'm not sure why that is, but there seems to be an over-abundance of walnut and cherry furniture, and what I like is the very pale almost to the point of being white color (I can't remember if it's beech or birch) that shows off colors against it much better, rather than swallowing them up like the darker stuff does.
The place was packed. Hub, sensitive fellow that he is and more immune to the shopping impulse, was fairly overwhelmed by the hordes of consumers. But we would our way through the entire place, and got a pot lid rack and 3 picture frames for about $6 total. Brenda got a few more things, but the same stuff at Blood Bath and Beyond would've probably cost a bunch more (not to mention Pier 1).
Granted, the picture frames upon close inspection appear to be made of wood scrounged from the pile at a construction site and banged together with a staple gun. But, they'll look fine on the wall and the pot lid rack is already doing it's thing and doing it well.
After Ikea, we headed home. I wanted to have a bit of dinner, so we stopped in a Chili's on the way out of town. I had some chicken fajitas with a bunch of tasty shrooms on top, and was good and didn't eat the tortillas. We ended up getting home close to midnight, and crashed right away since it'd been a really long day, and I had to be to work the next day.
