A possible solution to the car problem has presented itself.

Yesterday I overheard a co-worker complaining about her car, and saying she was going to have it towed to a junk yard. I'd gotten a ride from her once or twice and remember that she had a nice car. It turns out that she's talking about a different car; she has the new one, but kept her old one- a '94 Geo Prizm with 124k miles on it. The thing won't shift, and she's dumped a lot of money into it, and was very frustrated with it. I asked her how much she'd want for it, and she said 'whatever you want to pay for it.'

A Prizm is a Corolla, it turns out, with a GM alternator. If you replace the alternator, you have a car that can give you 200-300k miles if you're good to it, according to Gailon. He said if I can get it for a couple of hundred dollars I should jump on it- no more than $400, though, without him having a look at it. He expects from what she said that it will need anywhere from $500-1000 of work on it, but would ultimately be worth it.

It's not my camping vehicle, and it's red (ugh). But if I can get a reliable car that gets great mileage and will go for another 100k miles, all for $1400 at most, then Gailon says it's a bargain.

Of course, then when I get to work today, she says she wants to think about it. She's going to talk to her mechanic and see what it would cost to get it running again (though when I mentioned that my mechanic quoted $500-700 for clutch, she said 'ooh, that's a lot'). It's her first car and she said it has sentimental value, which I must say I understand completely. So she's going to think about it for a week then let me know. I feel better about this ethically anyway, I suppose, in that I didn't take advantage of her in a moment of frustration. :P

I hope this works out; I can discharge this debt a lot faster than what I was getting ready to have to pay. I wonder how much it would cost to get it painted another color though. Well, I'll look into that if it becomes an issue. First, crank up the car ju-ju to get the thing, and have it be a cheap repair.
